JOHN ELBERT ROBINSON
John Elbert Robinson died April 28, 1946. He was married to Melissa Blevins, who preceded him in death six years. To this union eleven children were born, three preceding him in death.
The following survive: Robert of Avondale, Penna., William of Middleton, Idaho, George, Mountain City, Mrs. Lucy Shephard, Exeter, Va., Mrs. Clyde Adams, Exeter, Va., Mrs. Montoe Bishop, Logan, W.Va., Mrs. Charlie Crowe, Johnson City, Mrs. Fleenor Norris, Doeville. One brother, Alec, survives; also 35 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Many years ago he joined the Bethel Baptist Church. Uncle Eb, as he was commonly known, leaves a great number of relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral services were held at Doe Valley Baptist Church, April 30, 1946, with Rev. Roby L. Painter and Rev. J. B. Buchanan in charge. Internment in the Brookshire Cemetery.

Noah Webster Robinson, age 83, of Route 3, Mountain City, (Doe Valley Community) died at his residence Thursday, 2:30 a.m. after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Johnson County, a retired farmer and the son of the late Alex and Ellen Swinney Robinson. He was a charter member of the Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hattie Stout Robinson, City; two sons, E.H. Robinson, Mountain City, and William Senter Robinson, Oxford, Pa.; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday from the Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. John Perkins and Rev. Earl Campbell officiating. Burial was in the Robinson Cemetery.
Pall-bearers[sic] were Jack Loggins, Lionel Gregg, C. Mullins, Archie Dillon, Wiley Dillon, J.L. Lowe, Joe Osborne and Ben Dillon.

Ruth Opal Garland Campbell, 92, formerly of Shady Valley, Tenn., passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at Erwin Health Care Center, Erwin, Tenn. She was born in Shady Valley, Tenn., on February 19, 1925 to the late Robert Garland and Emma Grace Rambo Garland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Campbell. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Campbell was a homemaker and she really enjoyed working on her farm.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and great-nephews and her sister-in-law, Ardna Campbell.
The family would like to especially thank Erwin Health Care Center in Unicoi, Tenn., for the last eight and one-half years of care they gave to "Aunt Ruth." The family really thanks and appreciates the center for all they did for her. Also, a special thanks to her public guardian, Wanda Martin, and her assistant Karrie, for seeing and caring for Ruth.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at Shady Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Richard Stout officiating. Music will be provided by Faye Campbell.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Alma “Marlene” Pierce, age 85, on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 in Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was born November 6, 1935, was a Christian of the Baptist faith, a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church and a graduate of Johnson County High School.

In addition to her parents, Fleenor and Lottie Norris, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Herrin Norris and R.L. Norris; three sisters: Tressie Holden, Frances Allen, and Lila Norris.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Harry “HD” Pierce of Butler, TN; two daughters: Lori Anderson of Butler, TN and Vikkie Minton and husband John of Florida; three grandchildren: J.T. Minton; Kayla Boone and husband Stuart; and Garrett Anderson and wife Cassie from Hampton, TN; and great grandchildren: Emmie and Hankie Boone and Elise and Emmalynn Anderson. Special niece (daughter) from “another mother” Alethia Lewis and husband Eddie also survive.

It was Marlene’s wishes to be cremated and no formal service held. A Celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Cobbs Creek Church with visitation starting at 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, and the Eulogy starting at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cobbs Creek Church. (As per her wishes, dress is to be casual, mom wasn’t into fancy.)

Marlene hoped her legacy would be that she was a loving and caring person and her spirit is now with the Lord,

ELIZABETHTON — The Lord welcomed a true Saint of God, Georgia Kate "Mama Georgie" Pope, 98, 723 Fairway Drive, Elizabethton, into his presence May 31, 2008, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a brief illness.

Georgia was a native of Johnson County and the daughter of the late George and Lou Buchanan Crosswhite. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church yet attended Memorial Presbyterian as her health allowed.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Charles H. Zolly Pope, son Jerry Pope, daughter-in-law: Joyce Pope and son-in-law: Sonny Hale, her Sisters: Etta Robinson, Sena McKinney, Emma Williams, Pheba Derthick, and Leone Lucke, her brothers Joe Crosswhite and Harlow Crosswhite.

Survivors include her devoted daughter: Joyce Pope Birchfield and her son-in-law that was more like a son to her, Jess Birchfield, of Elizabethton. A daughter: Leta Pope Hale, Elizabethton. Granddaughter: Dr. Katie Birchfield Gladstone and her husband Bob Gladstone of Hollywood, Florida, her nieces: Jean Campbell, Edith Fedyk and Carole Ann Vander Vlut. Nephews: Howard Bowers, Dean Crosswhite, Steve Lucke and Charles Lucke. A beloved special niece, angel Judy Deloach and her children Tiffany, Joey, Whitney, Joseph & Vic and many wonderful great nieces & nephews. Her very special friends: Crystall Cordell and Chris Pippin.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Preston Sartelle and Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Music will be provided by David Arney and Carol Bowers and soloist granddaughter Katie Gladstone.

Raymond Fleet Buchanan, age 77, of Butler passed away Monday, December 19, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born January 16, 1945 to the late Dana and Jestie Buchanan. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant son, Bobby Joe Buchanan; brothers, Walt, Joe, Alvin, John, and Tom Buchanan; and sisters, Betty Buchanan and Linda Arnold.

Raymond dearly loved his family, especially his children. He retired from Summers-Taylor; a job he truly enjoyed. He loved driving his cement truck.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Linda Gay Buchanan; daughter, Amanda Potter (Bryan); son, Steven Buchanan (Joy); granddaughters, Haley and Kristen Santucci; sisters, Margie Bryant of Aberdeen, North Carolina and Margret Potter of Roseburg, Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.

SHADY VALLEY - Delmer David Morley, age 94 of Shady Valley, Tennessee went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, December 05, 2018.

Delmer was born September 7, 1924, in Shady Valley, TN to the late David Jackson Morley and Cassie Delores Pierce Morley. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Lucille Brydie, Othella Icenhour, and Olena Levy; Eeight brothers, Felton, Leo, Otis, Curtis, N.T., Teddie, Freddie, and Autry Keys; two sons-in-law Jim Walker and Wayne Moser.

Delmer loved being outside and working in his vegetable garden and his apple orchard. He enjoyed sharing his extra produce with friends and family. Delmer enjoyed playing the guitar and mandolin. Delmer was a handyman who could fix anything.

Delmer was a World War II United States Army Veteran and was retired from Raytheon in Bristol, TN.

Delmer was a Christian and attended Shady Valley Baptist Church.

ELIZABETHTON - Juanita Pierce Tolliver, age 82, of Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Juanita was born in Mountain City, Tennessee to the late Joseph Wesley and Maude Morley Pierce. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William C. "Bill" Tolliver on February 25, 2014; her brother, Edwin Pierce; and three sisters, Jo Ella Long, June Shoun and Kay Pierce.

Juanita moved to Elizabethton from Wilkesboro in 1986 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Wilkesboro United Methodist church and a member of Wilkes Extension Homemaker's Club in Wilkesboro, NC.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Juanita Pierce Tolliver will be conducted at 12:30 PM on Friday, December 16, 2016 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Estel Williams, officiating. A eulogy will be provided by Dr. Aubrey McElroy. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Friday.

JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Jane Davis Loggins, age 81, Jonesborough, passed away Monday, December 2, 2019 at Hospice House in Bristol.

Mrs. Loggins was born in Johnson County and the daughter of the late N.U. & Stella Lowe Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Loggins.

She was a member of Tri Cities Baptist Church and the Johnson City South Camp Gideons Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Loggins, and her husband Hubert, were owners and operators of West Towne Hardware.

Survivors include one son, Mark Loggins; two sisters, Sara Wayland (Mike) and Barbara "Bobbie" Dancy; and several nephews and nieces.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Walter Atlee" Jack" Lowe, Sr., 91, of 947 Slabtown Road, Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday November 21, 2018, at the Lakebridge Health Care Center of Johnson City, TN.

Jack was born on August 27, 1927, in Carter County, TN to the late Henry Edgar Lowe, Sr. and Florence Jordan Lowe. Jack was also predeceased in death by his wife Sommai Lowe and stepfather Lionel L.D. Lowe as well as his brother Henry E. Lowe, Jr.

Mr. Lowe was a true Southern gentleman who loved his country. He served 27 years combined in the TN Guard, US Navy, and US Air Force. He entered the Navy at the ripe age of 17, serving as a radar man during WWII and participated in the A-bomb testing at Bikini Atoll. He became a Shellback and member of the Order of the Neptune after crossing the equator on a ship. He continued his service during the Vietnam War as a Master Sargant in the US Air Force, earning a Bronze Star and serving in the National Emergency Airborne Command Post (NEACP) under the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He loved gardening and collecting Oscar winning movies as well as supporting his football teams, the Washington Redskins and the Tennessee Volunteers. Jack was a Graduate of Johnson County High School.

Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters; Cat-Thee Dingus and husband Chris, Kingsport, TN and Deborah Sword and husband Ronnie, Oviedo, FL; a son, Walter 'Dub' Lowe and wife Louise, Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Catelin Dingus, Katherine Sword, and Ron Sword; his former spouse and friend Mary Lou Hajducsek.

PEACH BOTTOM, PA - Richard B. Shoun, age, 76, of Peach Bottom, PA passed away on August 13, 2016. Born in Mountain City, TN, Richard had lived in Pennsylvania most of his life.

He was the husband of Judy A. (Caudill) Shoun with whom he shared 51 years of marraige. He was the son of the late Joseph C. Shoun and Opal L. (Mullins) Shoun of Peach Bottom. Richard attended Oxford area schools. He worked on the family farm and later worked as a diesel mechanic at the former Herr's Motor Express in Quarryville for 18 years prior to retiring due to illness. He enjoyed antique cars and Nascar and was an avid bowler. He was a member of Porters Grove Baptist Church in Conowingo, MD. He was a member of Washington Lodge No. 156, F & AM of Quarryville, PA and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in Valley of Harrisburg, PA and Lancaster, PA, Lancaster County Shrine, Shriners International, and Zembo Temple in Harrisburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Violet M. McKinney and husband Royce of Peach Bottom; Brother-in-law, Samuel Caudill and wife Susan of Midland, NC; Nephews, James McKinney, Lonnie McKinney, Raymond McKinney, and Jacob Caudill; a special great-nephew, Jeramy McKinney and wife, Sarah; and several great nieces and nephews and many cousins.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 6-8 pm followed by a masonic service at 7 pm at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home Inc., 86 Pine St., Oxford. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Mountain City Funeral Home, Mountain City, TN, where friends and family may visit from 1-2 pm.

June Sluder, age 84, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the Mountain City Care Center. June was born on June 1, 1937 to the late Ambrose and Bertha Garland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Leslie Sluder; grandson, Shawn; and brothers, Bobby Garland and Jimmy Garland.

AJune was a hard worker who never complained. She had a heart of gold and took wonderful care of her family. June raised huge gardens and enjoyed canning the fruits of her labor. She loved quilting and made many hand sewn quilts over the years. She was a member of Shady Valley Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Dianne Donahue, Cindy Bublinec, and Theresa Taylor; sons, Rick Sluder and David Sluder; sister, Beverly McKinney; brothers, Vernis Garland and Lonnie Garland; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; dear friend, Lee Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews.

Dewey Harold Garland, better known to his friends as “Rubberneck,” 76, of Butler, Tenn., passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Tuesday, June 28, 2022. Harold was a truck driver and had been his whole life. He enjoyed what he did and enjoyed spending time with his family. Harold was always on the go. He had a laid back personality and a good sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh and laughing with them. He never met a stranger. He also enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR races, and watching westerns in his spare time.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 52 years, Idoma (Poole) Garland, of the home; daughters, Tammy Bobbitt, Renee and Wayne Hamm and Lea Ann and Richie Shaffer; brothers, James L. ELIZABETHTON — Dorothy Jean "Tootsie" Campbell, 83, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a brief illness.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late F. Brass and Sena Crosswhite McKinney. She was a homemaker. Mrs Campbell was an active member of First Free Will Baptist Church. She had taught the Beginners Sunday School Class for over 40 years.

Tootsie was a care giver, always helping people in any way possible.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Allen Campbell, March 23, 2008.

Eugene Bowers, 76, 704 S. Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Hunter and Emma Crosswhite Bowers. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Goforth, and his stepfather, Agee D. Williams.

Mr. Bowers was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton and a retired mechanical draftsman with Great Lakes Research Corporation.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Edens Bowers, of the home; a daughter, Debra Bowers Pierce, Elizabethton; a brother and sister-in-law, J. J. Howard "Lefty" Bowers, 90, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at The Waters of Johnson City, Tenn. He was a native of Elizabethton, Tenn., and son of the late Hunter Bowers and Emma Crosswhite Bowers. Howard's hobbies were running, weightlifting, bicycle riding, golf, and horseback riding. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, son, three granddaughters and great-granddaughter and also watching his son and granddaughters play sports. Howard also donated his time by volunteering at ETSU, Holston Habitat for Humanity, and the Veterans Administration.
Howard proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Howard held a Doctorate of Education from the University of Tennessee where he was a research associate and retired as Professor of Education at East Tennessee State University. He taught at Unaka Elementary, coached football at Unaka High School and Tennessee High where he was also a health and science teacher. Mr. Bowers then taught at Elizabeth City Elementary and Jr. High schools and was the school superintendent in Elizabeth City schools.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his step-father, Agee Williams; his brother, Eugene Bowers; and his sister, Thelma Goforth.

Lois Katherine Lowe Hill, age 85, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013, at her residence.

She was a native of Johnson County who had lived in Elkhart, Indiana, from 1950 to 1986,where she was a Union Steward for the UAW with the Exel Corporation for eighteen years. She was the daughter of the late Dewey William and Anna Crosswhite Lowe.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by: three brothers, Joseph, Bobby and Granville Lowe; and sister, Hazel Lowe.

She attended Highland Baptist Church with her husband. She loved Gardening and loved flowers. She enjoyed embroidery and loved to sing in church.

She had a special love for her granddaughters and great granddaughters and her many nieces and nephews.

Survivors include: her husband of sixty-seven years, John L. Hill, of the home; daughter, Vicki Sue Hill Early and her husband, Gary, of Fort Wayne, IN; three sisters, Shelby Jean Green, Johnson City, Mary Krogmire, Butler, and Peggy Ann Roark and her husband, Dean, Mountain City; two grandchildren, Ashley Gaugler Chaney and her special friend, Ed, and Kimberly Gaugler; two great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Emerie Chaney.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim and Bob Phillippi and paternal and maternal grandparents. Harold was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and the Good News Sunday School Class.

Harold was an avid hunter and spent many days and nights in the mountains hunting bear, raccoon, rabbits and deer. He was fond of his bear dogs and enjoyed the hunt as much as taking the animal. He was always willing to take the younger, inexperienced hunter and help them to experience his love of the mountains and hunting. Harold held the Tennessee State record when he checked in a black bear weighting 635 lbs

Harold is survived by his wife of 51 years, Faye Phillippi; two daughters, Lisa and her special friend Donnie and Jaycee Clawson; his mother, Virginia Phillippi; brother, Roby Phillippi and wife Carol; two grandsons, Ethan and Josh Clawson. Also surviving are multiple nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins who have fond memories of him. Sister-in-laws Virginia Manuel & husband Don, June Thomas & Friend Coleman, Ann Skewes & husband Mike, Harold had a special sister-in-law, Mae Matheson, who he entrusted to always be there to help him, Brother-in-law, Doran Swift & Wife Emogene.

He will be remembered by his many friends along with the members of the Doe Valley Sportsman Club, Stoney Creek Hunting Club, as well as many other hunting organizations.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October15, 2018 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 7 p.m. with Pastors Gale Hartley, Spencer Roark and Dean Smith officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir. Pallbearers will be Josh Clawson, Jamie Phillippi, Jeremy Phillippi, Jeff Phillippi, Doug Thomas, Mike Roark, Jerry Roark, Bob Mullins and Blake Phillippi. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Bethany Baptist Church, members of Doe Valley Sportsman Club, Mike Skewes, Dick Johnson, Jason Bryan, Ralph Matheson, Don Manuel, Doran Swift and Jerry Paul Stanberry. The graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Brookshire Cemetery.

LAUDERHILL, FL - Dr. Jessica Kate (Katie) Birchfield Gladstone of Lauderhill, Florida died Sunday, July 28, 2019 in the University Hospital, Tamarac, Florida.

Katie was born March 17, 1962 in the Johnson City Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of Joyce Pope Birchfield and the late Jesse James Birchfield. Kate was a member of the First Freewill Baptist church of Elizabethton, Tennessee. She was a very active church member in Florida leading the youth choir and was a soloist.

Katie was a wonderful, beautiful lady with so much heart. She worked diligently to do the work of the Lord. Her ability to pray would bring the spirit of the Lord to all those present.

Katie was a 1980 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She earned a B.S. Degree from East Tennessee State University and was a member of the Jazz Singers and Dancers. Katie received her Doctorate from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee.

Katie was the owner and operator of I Care for Eyes in Pembrook Pines, Florida where she practiced for 27 years. She was fluent in Spanish as many of her patients were Hispanic. Katie was known by her patients for the loving special care they received.

Katie Loved the water, especially skiing and spending time on her house boat the Katiedid on Watauga Lake.

Katie was proceeded in death by her father, Jesse James Birchfield, her maternal grandmother, Georgia (Mama Georgia) Pope, her paternal grandparents, Sudie Birchfield and Jesse Birchfield,Sr., an uncle, Sonny Hale and an uncle and aunt Jerry and Joyce Pope.

Those left to cherish her memory include; her husband, Robert Gladstone of the home, her mother Joyce Pope Birchfield, her special aunt, Leta Hale, cousins, Judy Carol DeLoach and her husband Victor, Tiffany Jenkins, Joey Garrison and her husband Josh, Whitney Taylor, Joseph Taylor and his wife Leslie and her Godson, Vic DeLoach, two much loved fur babies, Taipei and Hanji.

A service to honor Dr. Jessica Kate (Katie) Birchfield Gladstone will be conducted at 3:00 PM Thursday in the chapel of the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton, TN. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:45 PM Thursday.

Presiding ministers will be Rev. Raymond Amos and Rev. Randy Johnson.
