W. H. Calhoun, 73, died at 3 o'clock Sunday morning at his residence at Shell Creek following a lingering illness. Burial will be at the Fort Mount Cemetery at Newland. Active pallbearers will be Jack Winters, Lacey Shell, Shelton Hazelwood, Jim Greene, Ester Shell and Harton Winters. The body was removed to the residence Saturday afternoon.

Oscar Cleo Calhoun, 83, Rt. 9, Elizabethton, died Tuesday in the V.A. Medical Center, Mountain Home; following an extended illness. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was the son of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun was a member of the North Side Baptist Church, a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation, a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post No. 2166. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Nicky Walker, and by two brothers, Tate and Clarence Calhoun. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Fannie Presnell Calhoun, of the home; two sons, Roger Calhoun, Elkhart, Ind., and H.L. Calhoun, Mishawaka, Ind.; three daughters, Mrs. David (Lillian) Watts, Larnburg, N.C., Lucille Powell and Joyce Pierce, both of Elizabethton; one brother, Jeffie Calhoun, Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Mike (Texie) Peters, Hampton, and Mrs. Sam (Grace) Harrison, Elizabethton; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Presnell, Roan Mountain. A native of Avery County, N.C. she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Harrison, July 29, 1991, two daughters, and one son. Mrs. Harrison was a member of Centerview Church of Christ. Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, JoAnn and Claude Guinn, Maxine Ellis, and Christine "Cricket" Hamm, all of Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Farrell and Linda Harrison and George Ronnie Harrison, all of Elizabethton; a brother, Jeffy Calhoun, Hampton; six granddaughters, Claudia Holloway, Beverly Brewer, Hope White, Joy Harrison, Ronda Harrison, and Connie Lawson, all of Elizabethton; seven grandsons, Jeff Guinn, Sam Harrison, Gabe Harrison, Danny, Donnie, Sam and Tim Jones, all of Elizabethton; and nine great-grandchildren and one great, great-granddaughter survive. CHURCH HILL - Carleen C. Webb, 88, Church Hill, Tenn., went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, March 26, 2023 at Holston Valley Hospital, Kingsport. She was born April 28, 1934 in Newland, North Carolina, to the late Alfred P. & Hester Lewis Calhoun. Carleen was a 1953 graduate of Newland High School. She had lived in the Kingsport area for a number of years. She was the Pre-need Counselor at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton for several years. She had worked with various funeral homes in the area of pre-need planning. Prior to that, she was employed as a bookkeeper and accountant for over 25 years. She was employed at the Kingsport Press for eight years. Carleen was a member of the Spoken Word Fellowship in Johnson City. In her earlier years she loved to sing and travel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters: Thelma Bennett, Alba and Georgia Calhoun and Hattie Benton and six brothers: Willie, Gurney, Tilford, Max, Ned and Ray Calhoun. Four sisters-in-law: Bertha Calhoun, Evelyn Calhoun, Dora Calhoun and Helen Calhoun.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years: Paul Webb. A very special brother and sister-in-law: Albee David & Mable Calhoun, Kingsport. and Carlos Calhoun, Newland, North Carolina. A special niece: Roma Baker & husband Hal, Gate City, Virginia, special niece: Eyvonne Faucette, Brown Summit, North Carolina. A special nephew: Tim Calhoun & wife Jennifer, and their children: Christian, Zachary & Leah, all of Fall Branch. Also, several other nieces and nephews of which she loved all of them very much. Mrs. Nell V. Calhoun Cuthbertson (Mamma Nell), age 84, peacefully went to her heavenly home February 14, 2019.

She was born the eighth child on June 7, 1934 to Starlin Isaac Calhoun and Jodie Jane Benfield Calhoun in Mitchell County, N.C.

She was married to Floyd (Skeeze) Cuthbertson in July 1954.

Preceding her in death were her Parents: Starlin and Jodie; her husband: Floyd (Skeeze) Cuthbertson; Brother: Coye A Calhoun (Elsie) and six Sisters: Commeylee Sluder (Claude), Amey Sparks (Carl), Agnes Cooper (Dallas), Iris Cooper (Norman), Lucille Sparks (Newton) and Clara Wise (Alvin).

Although Nell had many siblings, she was the last child born and had many nephews and nieces her own age that she grew up with and stayed close.

Nell has two daughters: Debbie and Kelly, and two Sons-in-law: Bobby Blalock and Gene Annas (deceased). Also surviving are three Granddaughters: Shea Blalock Anderson (Eddie), Jodie Blalock Walker (Seth), McKinnley Elizabeth Annas (Abbey); and one Great-Granddaughter: Lucy M. Walker.

Nell was a beautiful gentle soul who loved everyone. She worked at various jobs during her life, the longest being a server at The Broyhill Center at App State where she retired. She faced several illnesses head on and endured them with grace and willpower. Nell was a member of First Baptist Church of Crossnore. She loved to sing and listen to old time gospel hymns.

Services for Nell V. Cuthbertson will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Crossnore First Baptist Church, with Lander Hefner officiating.

The family will receive friends beginning at noon to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Cuthbertson Cemetery

He was a retired miner, a member of the UMWA and had pastored the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church for 10 years, prior to his retirement in July. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Franklin Calhoun of Midway; two sons, Rev. Larkin C. Calhoun of Pine View and Harold of Dallas, Tex.; three daughters, Mrs. Jimmy (Rose Marie) Hunter of Charleston, Mrs. Jimmy (Reba Jane) Beckett of Crab Orchard and Mrs. Robert (Drema Gail) Trump of Beckley. In the early 1910's, Thomas C. Moody, his wife Mary Ellen Trivett and their family lived in Minneapolis, Avery County, NC. During this same period, the family of William Larkin Tolley and his wife Sarah L. "Sally" Taylor lived in the small settlement of Ivey Heights, about half-way between Minneapolis and Newland. The Ivey Heights Free Will Baptist Church is one of the few remants of this community.
Robert L. Moody, son of Thomas and Mary, met Aleatha E. Tolley, daughter of William and Sally. Whether they met in Ivey Heights or Minneapolis is not known. A romance developed, and the couple were wed on 17 Dec 1912. Aleatha was 14 years old.

A Few Highlights of Avery County History:
Avery County is North Carolina’s “baby county” (just 108 years old), but it is packed full of history. Here are just a few of the highlights.
While many long hunters, like Daniel Boone, fished and hunted in the area, the first settler was Samuel Bright. He arrived in the 1770s and built a home at Lower Old Fields of the Toe, called the Bright Settlement. Bright guided early settlers to the Watauga Settlement along an old Indian path, Bright’s Trace of the Yellow Mountain Road.
In September 1780, the Overmountain Men took that same route, over Roan Mountain, down Roaring Creek, and through Ingalls and Green Valley. They defeated the British at the Battle of Kings Mountain, considered the turning point of the American Revolution.
French naturalist Andre Michaux visited Grandfather Mountain in 1794, declaring it the highest mountain in the United States.
On April 4, 1840, the Childsville, Cranberry Forge, and Yellow Mountain Post Offices were established, the first in the area.
After several attempts throughout the 1850s, Mitchell County was created in February 1861, encompassing much of the area, almost to Banner Elk, which the Banners settled in 1848. Childsville, located at the current Avery County airport, became Calhoun. The first session of Mitchell County Court was held there.
The Civil War tore families apart. Many families along the North Toe River sided with the Confederacy. Those along the Elk River sided with the North. Many men marched away to fight at Manassas, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga. Locally, the Cranberry Iron mines produced ore for the South. Kirk’s raiders passed through in June 1864, burning the Palmer House in Altamont, and there was a skirmish near Banner Elk in the fall of 1864.
In June 1882, the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad reached Cranberry. While the mines had been in operation for decades, the arrival of the railroad provided easy access to outside markets. A month later, regular passenger service began. In March 1883, Cranberry got telegraph service.
Elk Park, the oldest town in present-day Avery County, was incorporated in 1885. That same year, Monroe Dugger and J. Erwin Calloway opened the Grandfather Hotel on Grandfather Mountain.
Samuel Kelsey purchased property from Walter Lenoir in 1888, including much of Grandfather Mountain. The Linville Improvement Company was formed in 1889, controlling some 16,000 acres in and around Grandfather. Kelsey helped found Linville.
The first mica grinding mill was built in Spear in 1891. Mica became big business, helping the Allies win WWII.
In 1892, the Yonahlossee Turnpike was completed, linking Linville with Blowing Rock. That same year, Monroe Dugger published “The Balsam Groves of Grandfather Mountain,” the first book by a local.
Edgar Tufts arrived in Banner Elk in 1895, eventually founding Lees-McRae College, Grace Hospital and the Grandfather Home for Children. Golf was played, possibly for the first time, in Linville that year.
The Linville River Railroad was chartered in 1896. However, before the first rail was laid, the business folded and was reborn as the Linville River Railway in 1899. The rails ran from Cranberry through Minneapolis, Vale, Newland, Montezuma, Pineola, Linville and, eventually, all the way to Boone.
Also in 1899, U.S. Marshall William H. Greer was killed, the first local law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty. Others include John Staford (1912); Zebulon Winters (1920); William Burleson (1923); Hardy Coffey (1936); Alvin Jones (1939); Max Daniels (1949); and Glenn Hicks (2003).
The Plumtree School for Boys opened in 1903. Five years later, Mrs. and Mr. Sloop, both medical doctors, arrived in Plumtree. They moved their practice to Crossnore in 1911. Also in 1908, the Tar Heel Mica Company opened in Plumtree.
In 1909, Scott Wiseman was born in Ingalls. After college in West Virginia, he began performing on WLS in Chicago, where he met, and later married, Lulu Belle (Myrtle Cooper). They went on to have an amazing career both on radio and on film, retiring to the Ingalls area in 1958.
A fire in 1910 destroyed much of the business district in Elk Park. That same month, a hydroelectric plant was constructed in Banner Elk, powering the school and hospital.
Avery County was created in February 1911. Elk Park was the first county seat, but after a vote, Old Fields of Toe became the official county seat. The area was renamed Newland, in honor of Lt. Gov. William C. Newland. The first newspaper, the Avery Vim, began publication in May, and the first court session was held in October.
Town lots were auctioned off in Newland in 1912. Construction began on the Altamont to Altapass section of the Crest of the Blue Ridge Toll Road, a precursor to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
With the completion of the courthouse and jail, the county seat moved from Elk Park to Newland in 1913. That same year, the owners of the Cranberry Iron and Cola company, owners of the ET&WNC, agreed to buy the Linville River Railway.
In 1915, Dr. Sloop constructed a dam on the Linville River in Crossnore, which eventually powered the hospital, school, and town. The Crossnore School, run by Mary Martin Sloop, was chartered in 1917.
The United States entered WWI in 1917, and more than 400 local men served in the armed forces. Eight men died in action, including Cpl. Jesse Staton, who was killed after the armistice papers were signed but before the cease fire took effect.
A flu pandemic struck in 1918, claiming at least 24 Avery County citizens.
Howard Marmon, who designed the car that won the first Indy 500, purchased property in Pineola in 1919.
Uncle Jake Carpenter, who kept death records for lower Avery County, died in 1920. In 1924, the first Singing on the Mountain was held at MacRae’s Meadow.
The town of Crossnore was incorporated in 1925. Preston Johnson was the first mayor.
In 1927, Lees McRae Institute became co-educational, opening a nursing school. Two years later, the school became Lees-McRae College. Also in 1929, the Cranberry Mines closed down.
Shepherd Dugger published “War Trails of the Blue Ridge” in 1931. In 1935, the road to Observation Point on Grandfather Mountain opened, and in 1936, the original Eseeola Lodge in Linville burned.
William Newland and Shepherd Dugger both died in 1938.
A flood in August 1940, worse than the previous one in 1916, destroyed the railroad. The line from Cranberry all the way to Boone was abandoned, despite local protests.
In January 1941, a fire swept through the business section of Newland, destroying several structures. Fire returned in January 1961. There were other fires as well: Elk Park in 1903 and 1914; the Cranberry Hotel in 1924; and the boys dormitory at the Plumtree School for boys in 1927.
The United States entered WWII in 1941. More than 1,200 local citizens served, and 54 died in service. In Elk Park, passenger service resumed on the ET&WNC, continuing through the war years, taking people to work in war-related jobs in Elizabethton. Eventually, the line from Tennessee to Cranberry was abandoned; the last regular run was in 1950.
Dr. Mary Sloop was chosen as the American Mother of the year in 1951; Linville Falls was donated to the National Park Service in 1952, the same year that Hugh Morton acquired Grandfather Mountain. Morton constructed the Mile High Swinging Bridge that same year.
Highway 105, connecting Boone to Linville, opened in 1955. The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games began in 1956. Richard Nixon spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony of Cannon Hospital in 1958. The hospital opened in 1961, the same year that Dr. Sloop passed away. Mrs. Sloop passed the next year.
The Mountain Glen Golf Course opened in 1964, and the nursing school at Lees-McRae closed in 1965. Joe Hartley, founder of Singing on the Mountain, passed in 1966. Both the Grandfather Golf Club and Beech Mountain Ski Resort opened in 1967, and in 1968, the National Park Service and Hugh Morton reached an agreement on the route of the Blue Ridge Parkway over Grandfather Mountain.
The Avery County High School opened in 1969, merging the high schools in Newland, Crossnore and Cranberry. The sales office for Linville Land Harbor opened the same year. The Land of Oz opened on Beech Mountain in 1970 and closed in 1980, although it is occasionally opened.
In 1971, a Christmas tree from Avery County was selected for the White House. Mayland Technical College was established by the General Assembly that same year. “Where the Lilies Bloom” was filmed locally in 1972. Tommy Burleson played basketball for the men’s team in the 1972 US Olympics. Johnny Cash performed at Singing on the Mountain in 1974, the same year that the Sugar Mountain Golf Course opened.
Linville Ridge Golf Course opened in 1981, the same year that Scotty Wiseman died, and construction began on the Linn Cove Viaduct, which opened a year later. Horton Cooper, who published a history of Avery County in 1964, passed away in 1986, and “The Winter People” was filmed in Plumtree in 1987.
Lees-McRae College became a four-year school, and the Grandfather Mountain Nature Museum opened in 1990. The hospitals in Crossnore and Banner Elk merged in 1999, the same year Lulu Bell Wiseman died. Hugh Morton passed away in 2006. The Morton family sold the Grandfather Mountain backcountry in 2008, an area that became Grandfather Mountain State Park in 2009.

She worked as a Real Estate Broker in Canton Ohio from the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s, raised a family, and then retired to North Carolina with her husband Frank. Juanita, born February 12, 1929, was the tenth of twelve children born to William A. Johnson and Auby Cornett Johnson of Newland, NC. Juanita was preceded in death by her son Daryl, her husband of 61 years Frank William Hodges, originally of Boone, NC, and nine of her brothers and sisters. Her surviving sisters are Willa Mae Sluder and Margaret Ledford of Newland.
Juanita is also survived by her children; Marlene and her husband David Kirk and their son D.J. of St. Louis, Marlene's son Daniel Cusma of Houston and his wife Elizabeth, Lawrence and his wife Sherry of Hendersonville and their son Jason and daughter Beth Owenby and Beth's husband Mark of Asheville, NC; Daryl's daughters Reina Perkins and husband Robert and Kelly Williams of Houston; and Jeffrey and his wife Cecelia of Houston. Survivors also include four great grandchildren.
Friends will be received before the service from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Newland, NC. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at the Fork Mountain Cemetery.

Margaret Johnson Ledford, age 82, of Nebo, slipped away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at The McDowell Hospital.

Born in Avery County, North Carolina on February 26, 1934, she was the daughter of the late William and Auby Cornett Johnson.

A loving mother, grandmother and sister, Margaret took pride in helping others, and was known for loving everyone she encountered. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lon James Ledford, Sr., who was a United States Army/United States Air Force veteran and served during the Korean War; two daughters, Brenda Kay Ledford and Pamela Gail Christ; and one granddaughter, Kennette Dotson.

Margaret is survived by two daughters, Rowena Ledford Smith (Richard) of Morganton and Debbie Ledford (Mason Pierce) of Shelby; one son, Lon James Ledford, Jr. (Tara) of Pinehurst; one sister, Willa Mae Sluder of Newland; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church with Revs. Rick Wood and Stephen Reeves officiating. Interment will follow at Cane Creek Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Bakersville.

Mr. William Benjamin "Bill" Isaacs, 82, of Antioch Road, Mountain City, Tenn., died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 15, 2004.

He was born Sept. 4, 1922 in Watauga County, N.C., a son of Enoch and Martha Cornett Isaacs.

Mr. Isaacs was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a tradesman.

Survivors include one daughter, Theresa Marie Isaacs of Zionville; three sons, Terry lee Isaacs of Meat Camp, Dennis Martin Isaacs and wife, Paulette, of Elk Park and Robert Dale Isaacs and wife, Cindy, of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Shirley Sanders of Lenoir and Blanch Presnell of Zionville; and two brothers, Joe Isaacs of Lenoir and Johnny Isaacs of Sugar Grove.

Fourteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by three sons, Julius Stephen and David Benjamin Isaacs and an infant; three daughters, Martha Sue and Mary Carolyn Isaacs and an infant; one brother, Rom Isaacs; and his parents, Enoch and Martha Cornett Isaacs.

Services were conducted Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Church officiating.

Burial was in the Henson's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Lois Edna Isaacs Henson

Mrs. Lois Edna Henson, 82, of 818 Medical Park Drive, Mountain City, Tenn., died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at Mountain City Care Center.

She was born in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Enoch and Martha Ann Cornett Isaacs.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She loved traveling.

Survivors include three sons, Baxter Henson and wife, Debbie, of Charleston, S.C., Wayne Henson and wife, Jane, of Jackson, Tenn., and Gary Henson and wife, Teresa, of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Blanche Presnell of Zionville and Shirley Sanders of Lenoir; two brothers, John Isaacs of Sugar Grove and Joe Isaacs of Lenoir; and a special friend, Janice Hawkins. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Henson; two brothers, Rom and Ben Isaacs; and one sister, Wanda Smith.

Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Born April 29, 1934 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Enoch and Martha Isaacs Cornett. Mrs. Presnell was a homemaker and a member of Henson's Chapel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband; Johnny Presnell, four daughters; Lois Evans and husband, Ed, of Boone, Maxie Jones and husband, Jerry, of Vilas, Janet Snyder and husband, Michael, of Gray, Tennessee, and Carla Presnell of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; one son Mark Presnell of Wilkesboro; 10 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, and 2 step great grandchildren, one sister; Shirley Sanders of Lenoir, and two brothers; John Isaacs of Sugar Grove, and Joe Isaacs and wife, Kay, of Lenoir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Wanda Smith, Edna Henson, and Ruby Isaacs, and two brothers, Ben and Rom Isaacs.

Funeral services for Mrs. Linda Blanche Isaacs Presnell will be conducted Sunday afternoon, August 14, 2011, at 3 o'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Dan Church. Burial will follow at Henson's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2 until 3 o'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Paralee Lewis, 90, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2018 in Massillon, Ohio.

Born Oct. 5, 1928 in Avery County, NC, to the late Talmadge and Ruby Lewis, she lived in the greater Canton, Ohio, area from 1947 until her death.

Paralee faithfully worshipped her creator as one of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1953. Family was most important to her and their pictures were her most prized possessions. She loved her flowers, gardening, square-dancing and artwork.

She was preceded in death by her faithful Husband of 56 years: Deward Richard Lewis, in 2003; a younger Sister: Frankie Cummings, and younger Brother: Kermit Lewis of North Carolina.

She is survived by a younger Sister: Charlene Ellis; Sister-in-law: Robina Hall; Son:Dale (Patty) Lewis; Daughter: Darlene Renae Copley; Grandchildren: Dorinda (Joseph) Weaver, Darian (Madeline) Lewis, Andrea (Robert) White, Aaron (Sarah) Lewis, Denese Ashbaugh, Devona (Jeremy) VanFossen, and David Copley, 13 Great grandchildren, three great-great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred Buchanan McCall, age 94, of Butler, formerly of Hampton, went home to be with the Lord at the home of her daughter on Monday, March 24, 2014, following an extended illness.
She was the daughter of the late Clarence & Mary Sparks Calhoun and was born in the Linville Falls Community of Avery County, N.C.
Mildred retired from Unilever Corporation and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of First Christian Church in Elizabethton and a fifty year member of the Tennessee Order of the Eastern Star #163 Sycamore Chapter.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fin G. Buchanan; her second husband, Robert "Bob" McCall; a son, David Buchanan; four brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include one daughter, Catherine Johnson and husband, Howard, of Butler; one son, Michael Buchanan and wife, Eleanor, Frankfort, IL; fourteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Dimple Stine, Johnson City, and Bea Campbell; and one brother, Gene Calhoun. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM at First Christian Church in Elizabethton.
A service to honor Mildred's life will follow the visitation at 12:00 PM with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Niles & Lena Onks and Gene Estep.
The graveside service and interment will follow the funeral service on Wednesday at the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Michael Buchanan, James Buchanan, Niles Onks, Adam Savicz, Dwayne Calhoun and John Clawson. Woodhall Young will serve as honorary pallbearer.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Judy Matthews and Jennifer Clawson for the love and care shown to Mildred during her illness.

Dimple Margaret Calhoun Stine departed this world on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, after a lengthy illness. She was greatly loved and will be missed. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Mary Sparks Calhoun. Dimple was a woman of great faith and was an active member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church for many years. She was a member of the choir and was also actively involved in Awana and the children's ministry. Dimple worked at ITT-North Electric for some time but her passion was baking, gardening, ceramics and knitting. In addition to her parents, Dimple was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank Calhoun, Fred Calhoun, Audie Calhoun, and Harlan Calhoun; and two sisters, Mildred McCall, and Lois Pennington.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 30 years and caregiver, Donald E. Stine, Sr.; a stepson Edward Stine and his wife Janice; a daughter Sherry Hill; and a son Terry Hill, all of whom she greatly loved. The joy of her heart was her beloved grandchildren, Rachel (Stine) Hicks and her husband Jason, Adam Stine, Nathan Stine, and Abigail Stine; and one newborn great-grandchild, McKenna Hicks.

The family will receive friends to share memories from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, Johnson City. Lucille was born in Carter County to the late Oscar and Fannie Presnell Calhoun. Lucille was a homemaker and had formerly worked at Winn-Dixie as a sales clerk. She was a loving mother and grandmother and loved everyone she met, she never knew a stranger. Lucille was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting and cooking Sunday dinner for her family.

Elkhart, Ind. - Joyce L. Pierce, 81, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Riverside Village. She was born September 30, 1933, in Shell Creek, Tenn., to Oscar and Fannie (Presnell) Calhoun. She married Billy Ray Pierce, who preceded her in death on May 13, 1979. She was also preceded in death by a son, Nickie L. Walker, in 1978, and two brothers, H.L. Calhoun in 2010, and Dorse Calhoun, in 1931. Joyce was a homemaker who loved to crochet. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, singing at her church (the Freewill Baptist Church in Elizabethton, Tenn.) and listening to country and western music. She was known for her chocolate gravy. Surviving are two grandsons, Shannon and Aaron Walker, both of St. Cloud, Fla; two sisters, Lillian Potter of Elkhart and Lucille Powell of Elizabethton, Tenn.; an brother, Roger (Sandy) Calhoun of Elkhart; a sister-in-law, Nancy Calhoun of Mishawaka; and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the 3 p.m. Thursday, January 22, celebration of life service at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Rick Pirtle from the Riverview General Baptist Church will preside and cremation will follow the service.

ELIZABETHTON - William "Bill" Zane Peters, age 85, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Bill was born in Hampton, Tennessee to the late Mike and Texie Calhoun Peters.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Peters; and two sisters, Louise Hazlewood and Gail White; his second wife, Peggy Smith Peters; and his dog and companion, "Pandora".

Bill had worked as a pipefitter and was both a United States Army veteran and a United States Navy veteran. He was of the Protestant faith and attended Prayer Tabernacle, where he served as a deacon. Bill enjoyed riding motorcycles, woodworking, shooting muzzleloaders, riding horses and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles sports fan.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of forty three years, Mary Tyree Peters, of the home; six children, Billy Manwaring and wife Carmen, of Dallas, TX, Kitty Moore and husband Ralph, of Elizabethton, Gregory Zane Peters, of Elizabethton, TN, Charles "Cowboy" Webb, of Johnson City, TN, Wendy Webb Avery, of Johnson City, TN, and Jeremy Daniel Peters, of the home; eight grandchildren, Samantha, Zane, Julia, Stephanie, T.J., Kristi, Tamrah and Rylan; fourteen great grandchildren; two brothers, George "Buster" Peters and wife Nancy, of Deer Park, NY and Steve Peters and wife Sherrie, of Jonesborough, TN; and one sister, Carolyn Magnuson and husband Terry, of Mishawaka, IN.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of William "Bill" Zane Peters will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 29, 2018 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Johnny Hilton and Pastor Mack Presnell, officiating. Music will be provided by Ralph Moore, soloist. Doyle A Calhoun, 87, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

Doyle was born on July 18, 1935 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Coye A. Calhoun and the late Elsie Sluder Calhoun.

Doyle was a graduate of Newland High School and had attended NC State and ETSU. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Doyle worked in Printing and Graphic Art. He was in charge of the Metropolitan Atlanta Combined Federal Campaign, and was awarded for his work in the Action/Georgia DHR Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent Program. He was recognized for Outstanding Achievement as Printing Coordinator for GSA.

In his youth, Doyle, was a member of the Vale Freewill Baptist Church in Newland. He was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga., for 35 years and was currently a member of the Cranberry Baptist Church.

Doyle was known for his gourmet cooking and he enjoyed painting, bowling, archery, hunting, gardening, making wine, fishing, photography, bird watching, four wheelers, boating, making fishing lures, skiing, dancing and loved Mexican food. He was also a member of the Avery County Christmas Tree Farmers Association, National Rifle Association and the American Hunters Association.

He was preceded in death by his father, Coye A Calhoun; mother, Elsie S. Calhoun; nephew, Coye Yates and a niece, Christie Yates.

Doyle leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 63 years, Grace Ollis Calhoun; two daughters, Nancy Calhoun (Gary) Thomason Whenman of Newland, NC, Andrea Calhoun (Jesse) Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jordan Thomason of Newland, NC, Tori Thomason of Newland, NC, Zane Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Stella Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; great great grandchild, Ruby Childress of Newland, NC; and a sister, Glenda C. Services for Doyle A Calhoun were held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 10, from the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Lucas McKinney, David Burnop and Gene Honeycutt officiating. Interment followed in the Fork Mountain Cemetery, where Doyle was the Manager for more than 28 years.

HAMPTON – Raymond Calhoun, 93, Hampton, passed away on September 8, 2019, at the VA at Mountain Home, Johnson City.

Born November 25, 1925, in Avery County, North Carolina to the late Roy E. Calhoun and Oma Johnson Cheyney. Raymond was a proud World War II veteran who served in the United States Navy. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters on the USS Chinaberry, a net tender ship. He was retired as a supervisor with Unisys Corporation, Bristol. Raymond was an active member and elder emeritus of the Hampton Christian Church and a lifetime member of Hampton Masonic Lodge 750.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Cates Calhoun; five brothers, Roy Calhoun, Jr., Edgar Calhoun, Russell Calhoun, John Calhoun, and Harvey Calhoun; one sister, Jerry Ann Calhoun.

Lena Frances Moody DeLoach was born on August 13th, 1920 in Pulaski County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Robert Lafette Moody and his wife Aleatha E. Tolley. Her mother died when she was 8 years old, so she helped raise her younger brother and sister.

She grew up during the Great Depression, and her family moved several times between Kentucky and Tennessee seeking employment. Her family moved to Canton, Ohio, in 1924, and to Waynesburg, Kentucky, in 1925. In 1929, they moved back to Canton, and in 1931, to Johnson City, Tennessee.
In 1938, she met and married Javan Astor "Mike" DeLoach in Johnson City, Tennessee. Over the next 25 years, they had five children: Michael in 1938, Craig in 1940, Eric in 1947, Joseph in 1960 and Jane in 1963. She liked to tell people that she had children in school for forty years, Michael starting school in 1943 and Jane getting her masters degree in 1987.

Lena and her husband loved the outdoors, taking frequent hikes in the mountains with the children. She also enjoyed Sunday car rides and picnics, and she dearly loved her farm.

Lena was a traditional stay at home mother for most of her life. She was a Den Mother for Pack 38, sponsored by the Calvary Presbyterian Church. In 1959, they bought a farm in the Fairview community of Washington County, Tennessee. There, the family became members of the Fairview United Methodist Church.

After her youngest children were in elementary school, Lena got a job in the
cafeteria at Jonesborough Middle School. During that time, she went to night school and got her high school GED diploma. After getting her diploma, she worked in the math learning lab at Jonesborough Middle School. Her husband Mike DeLoach predeceased her in 1996. Left to grieve her passing are her five children: Michael and his wife Dorothy, Craig, Eric and his wife Judy, Joe, Jane Morison and her husband Whit; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 7th from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Dillow-Taylor Funeral home in Jonesborough. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 8th at Fairview Cemetery.

She was born July 25, 1925 in Alliance, OH to the late Robert L. and Aletha (Towley) Moody. She was a waitress for many years at Angelo's Spaghetti House, Russlee's and ChaRazzo's restaurants. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Angelo DiMarzio in 1985 and Willis L. Rambo in 1992 and several brothers. She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey DiMarzio of Canton and Philip DiMarzio of Tempe, AZ; granddaughters, Natalie and Alexandra DiMarzio of Canton; a sister, Lena (Frances) DeLoach of Jonesboro, TN; stepson, Willis L. HAMPTON - Velma E. Tester, 74, of Hampton, went home to be with her Lord, on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. She was the daughter of the late William Oscar and Merle Hicks Morton and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen O. Tester, on June 22, 2010.

Mrs. Tester was a life time member of Union Baptist Church in Hampton where she served the church faithfully as a Sunday School teacher and a choir member. She loved to watch movies on the Hallmark Channel, and taking trips to Gatlinburg. She loved to spend time with her family and attend services at her church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Scott Tester, and his wife, Rebecca, Hampton; four grandchildren, Marissa Marie Tester, Mark Scott Tester, Cody Ryan Keene, Dave Newton Ramey; a sister, Glenda Ranshaw, and her husband, Rev. Doug Ranshaw; brother-in-law, Richard Tester, and his wife, Betty, all of Hampton; three nieces, Tiffany Arnett, Amy Lowe, Amanda Blair; and a nephew, Travis Ranshaw. A special friend, Karen Matherly, also survives.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Tester will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Wesley Duncan, and Rev. Doug Ranshaw, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Union Baptist Church Choir. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service, and at the home of her son at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Travis Ranshaw, Mark Tester, Dave Ramey, Cody Keene, Eugene Keene and Ray Arnett. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Union Baptist Church. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the cemetery at 10:45 am on Wednesday.

The family wishes to express a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses on the 5200 floor of the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital for the concern and care shown to Mrs. Tester and the family during her time there.

Charles W. Trice, 91, of Newland passed away at his home Thursday morning, May 13, 2021 after a prolonged illness.

He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 69 years, Louise; his daughter, Kathie Massee (David, deceased); and his son, Charles W. Jr., “Bill” (Kathy). He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who loving called him “Papa”, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vaughn and Thosa (Johnson) Trice; his son, Rodney Evan (Regina), two brothers, Bob and Max; and two sisters, Corine and Maxine.

Charles was a lifelong native of Avery County and was a prominent contractor of many quality homes in the area, particularly at Grandfather Golf and Country Club during its early development. He was proud to have also served as general contractor for construction of beautiful homes for all three of his children.

He was dedicated to his family and his church, Vale Free Will Baptist. He served fifty years as a Master Mason of Linville Lodge No. 489. He enjoyed ‘coon hunting and training his hounds in his earlier years.

Graveside services for Charles Trice were held on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the Fork Mountain Cemetery.

Marie M. Cuthbertson, age 85, of Newland, died February 20, 2017 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine, NC.
She was born November 11, 1931 in Newland, Avery County, NC.

She was a member of the Crossnore Baptist Church. She loved flower arranging, crafting, sewing, homemaking, her church and Sunday School class, reading the Bible, and volunteer work with little children. Marie had volunteered for the Sloop Memorial Hospital for many years and had served as a Teacher's Aide and Substitute Teacher.

Along with her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, J.P. Cuthbertson; two sisters Nellie Vines, Shirley Sines and two brothers Hoyle and Jimmie.

Marie is survived by her two daughters, Martha and husband Jesse Hardy of Pinnacle NC and stepdaughter Lisa Evers and husband John; stepgrandaughters Amanda and Isabella, Priscilla and Emmett Cox of Crumpler NC and stepgrandsons Robert and Jesse and three stepgrand children, Jacob, Raissia and Haylon. two sons, David and Linda Cuthbertson of Newland, Nathan and Alice Cuthbertson of Burgaw NC, and grandchildren Olivia and Ben; three sisters Velma and husband Jim Oxendine , Doris Taylor and husband Glen, Wilda Woodie, and one brother Bud Johnson and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services held at the Crossnore First Baptist Church with Rev. Lander Heafner and Dr. Phil Murdock officiating. Interment in the Cuthbertson Family Cemetery in Newland.

Zebulon (Bud) Johnson, age 85, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, at The Waters at Roan Highlands Nursing Center in Roan Mountain, Tenn.

He was born on March 20, 1933 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of Lillard Johnson and Augusta Cole Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his Parents; Sons: David (Bud) Johnson, Danny Johnson; Daughter: Mary Buchanan; Sisters: Marie Cuthbertson, Nellie Vines, and Shirley Sines.

Bud enjoyed Farming and listening to Country and Bluegrass Music.

BUTLER — Catherine D. Buchanan Johnson, age 64, of Butler, passed away at her home on Thursday, July 14, 2016.

Catherine was born in Carter County to the late Fin G. Buchanan and Mildred Calhoun Buchanan McCall.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, David Buchanan; and her step father, Bob McCall.

Catherine was a registered nurse, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Nursing Management. She had worked locally with the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and Mountain States Health Alliance. Her nieces and nephews were very special to her and she loved to shop with them whenever the opportunity arose. She and her husband, Howard, are both members of First Methodist Church in Elizabethton. She also served as Chaplin for the Order of the Eastern Star and was a graduate of Culinary School. In addition to shopping, she enjoyed cooking and crafting.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 36 years, Howard W. Johnson, of the home; a brother, Michael Buchanan and wife Eleanor, of Frankfort, Illinois; her step children, Rob Johnson, of Ohio, Jennifer Maryanski, of Knoxville, Michael Johnson, of Indiana, and Rebecca Swing, of Wisconsin. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mrs. Catherine D. Buchanan Johnson will be conducted at 12:30 PM on Monday, July 18, 2016, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Niles and Lena Onks. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Monday.

The graveside service will follow in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton. Active pallbearers will be her nephews and step sons. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Mountain Home Construction.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her special friends and care givers, Jennifer Clawson and Judy Matthews for the love and care they gave to Catherine during her illness.
