W. H. Calhoun, 73, died at 3 o'clock Sunday morning at his residence at Shell Creek following a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Calhoun; six children, Clarence of Elizabethton, Oscar of Shell Creek, Jeff Calhoun and Mrs. Mike Peters of Hampton, Tate Calhoun and Mrs. Sam Harrison of Shell Creek; four brothers, Dave of Erwin, John, Fork, Tillmon of Newland, N.C.; two sisters, Sarah of Crossnore and Nannie of Ashe County, N. C.; 38 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 10 o'clock a.m. at the Evergreen Church at Shell Creek with the Rev. Earnest Buck and the Rev. Handy Wilcox officiating. Burial will be at the Fort Mount Cemetery at Newland. Active pallbearers will be Jack Winters, Lacey Shell, Shelton Hazelwood, Jim Greene, Ester Shell and Harton Winters. The body was removed to the residence Saturday afternoon.

Rev. F.C. Calhoun, 61, of Midway died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday in a local hospital following a long illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church at MacArthur with Revs. L.A. Garten, Winston Sweeney and Lee Richardson officiating. Rev. Calhoun was born June 16, 1912 in Newland, N.C., a son of the late Larkin C. and Lina Tolley Calhoun. He was a retired miner, a member of the UMWA and had pastored the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church for 10 years, prior to his retirement in July. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Franklin Calhoun of Midway; two sons, Rev. Larkin C. Calhoun of Pine View and Harold of Dallas, Tex.; three daughters, Mrs. Jimmy (Rose Marie) Hunter of Charleston, Mrs. Jimmy (Reba Jane) Beckett of Crab Orchard and Mrs. Robert (Drema Gail) Trump of Beckley. Three Brothers, Earl of Spartan, N.C., James and John L., both of High Point, N.C.; four sisters, Mrs Media Cornett of Marion, N.C., Mrs. Rosy Buchannon of Newland, N.C., Mrs. Nina Mae Olson of High Point, N.C. and Mrs. Ruth Moody of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren. Oscar Cleo Calhoun, 83, Rt. 9, Elizabethton, died Tuesday in the V.A. Medical Center, Mountain Home; following an extended illness. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was the son of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun was a member of the North Side Baptist Church, a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation, a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post No. 2166. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Nicky Walker, and by two brothers, Tate and Clarence Calhoun. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Fannie Presnell Calhoun, of the home; two sons, Roger Calhoun, Elkhart, Ind., and H.L. Calhoun, Mishawaka, Ind.; three daughters, Mrs. David (Lillian) Watts, Larnburg, N.C., Lucille Powell and Joyce Pierce, both of Elizabethton; one brother, Jeffie Calhoun, Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Mike (Texie) Peters, Hampton, and Mrs. Sam (Grace) Harrison, Elizabethton; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Presnell, Roan Mountain. Artha M. Johnson, age 90, of Medina passed away in Western Reserve Masonic Community on Monday, April 27, 2009. She was born in Newland, N.C. on September 4, 1918 to the late Tilman and Melissa Calhoun, and spent much of her life as a homemaker. Artha was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple and enjoyed quilting and sewing. She will be greatly missed as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Emit Johnson in 1998, son, Finley Johnson in 1997; six brothers, Don, Austin, Bill, Jake, Bernie, Henry and sister, Mattie. She is survived by her son, Gary Jr. and his wife Shelva: five grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Barb Johnson and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2009 in the Reed Funeral Home Canton Chapel with Pastor, Jeremy Johnson officiating. Burial to follow in Sunset Hills Burial Park.

Horace Calhoun, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at his residence. A native of Carter County, Horace was born on October 16, 1923 to the late Edwin and Blanche McKinney Calhoun. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Ruth Jones Calhoun; two sisters, Stella Freeman and Betty Calhoun; three brothers, Carroll Calhoun, Reynard Calhoun, and Herschel Calhoun.

Horace retired from North American Rayon Corporation as an electrician and was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II and was a radio operator for General Patton's army. He was a member of Eastside Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon and also as a Sunday School teacher. He was the first quarterback of the first Cloudland High School football team in 1941. His greatest legacy is being a devout follower of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Deborah Little and husband Danny, of Hampton; his son, Jerry Calhoun and wife Teresa, of Elizabethton; his grandchildren, Jennifer Hicks and husband Brian, Alan Little and wife Tracy, Jessica Calhoun, Sarah Lyons and husband Justin; two great grandchildren, Bryson and Brody Hicks; one sister, Christine Martin, of Elizabethton; his nieces, Gail Johnson, Sharon Palmer, Barbara Jones, Donna Holland, Lisa Owens, and Laura Roberts; his nephews, Tony Martin, Terry Martin and Doug Calhoun. Several great nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Horace Calhoun will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Justin Deaton, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Tuesday; or at the residence of his daughter and son at any time.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Alan Little, Brian Hicks, Woody "Bill" Lyons, Justin Lyons, Scotty Johnson and Matthew Myers. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Holder, Jerry Shoun, Kenneth Jewett, Jack Smith, Tip Smith, Ted Tipton, David Russell, George Greer, Andy Arnett and all his Christian brothers and sisters.
