William M. Cable, 58 years old, of route 2, Butler, passed away Friday at his home after a four months' illness.
Mr. Cable was a lifetime resident of Carter County and was a member of the Elk Mills Christian Church.
Surviving him, besides his wife, Caroline, are seven sons, John of Shell Creek; Jadie of Butler, route 2; Conley of Valley Forge; Wheeler of Hampton; Chauncy of Butler; Millard of Butler; and Private Hardie Cable, with the armed forces in Italy; three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Odom of Shell Creek; Mrs. Mac Morgan and Mrs. George Mann of Hampton; one brother, McKinley Cable of Butler, route 2; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Hartley and Mrs. Kathryn Mills, both of route 2, Butler; and 29 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at the home with the Rev. Johnny Hall and the Rev. Dana Miller in charge. Burial will be in the family cemetery. The Tetrick Funeral Home is in charge.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late William and Emma Stout Potter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dovie Irene Potter, Nov. 10, 1998, a daughter, Grace Cable, in 1996, two sons: Ray and Ralph Potter; a sister, Sarah Hollifield; five brothers: Bronlow, Harrison, Millard, Blaine and George Potter. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Stone Mountain Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War I. Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law: Larry Potter, of the home; Dennis and Wanda Potter, Elk Park, N.C.; and James "Red" and Betty Glover, Hampton; five daughters and three sons-in-law: Gayle Ashley, Mary and Howard Estep, all of Elizabethton; Linda Potter, Betty and Daniel Hill, all of Johnson City; Ruth and Wayne Harmon, Butler. JOHNSON CITY — Mr. Fred Douglas Duncan, 89, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Hermitage Health Center.

He was the son of the late W.A. and Eliza Greenwell Duncan, Sr. and was born in Old Butler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Harrison and a brother, W.A. Duncan, Jr.

Mr. Duncan attended Watauga Academy, graduated from Elizabethton High School and also attended Steed College of Business. He worked at May Mead Lime Company of Mountain City, Giant Food Markets, Winn Dixie and retired from United Oil Company. Following his retirement he repaired clocks. He was a faithful member of Calvary and Sinking Creek Baptist Churches.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Arcadia Floyd Duncan of the home; a sister, Helen Duncan of Elizabethton, a nieces Brenda Brown, a great niece, Lisa Montgomery, a great-nephew, Joe Brown, great-great nephews, Seth and Cody Montgomery and Houston Brown, all of Hampton. He also leaves a host of cousins and friends.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Duncan will be conducted on Thursday, February 18, 2016, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. David Montgomery and Rev. Cody Montgomery officiating. Music will be under the direction of Seth and Cody Montgomery.

The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 19, 2016, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Donnie Mitchell, Larry Lewis, David Cannon and others selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the men's Sunday School Class of Sinking Creek Baptist Church.

Helen Marie Duncan, 88, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness.
A native of Butler, she was a daughter of the late William Andrew Duncan Sr. and Eliza Greenwell Duncan.
Helen was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a retired secretary for the U.S. Navy Department in Washington, D.C. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Harrison; two brothers, WA Duncan Jr. and Fred Duncan; and a great-nephew, Cody Montgomery.
Survivors include a niece, Brenda H. Brown; a great-niece, Lisa Brown Montgomery and husband David; a great-nephew, Joe Brown Jr.; and two great-great-nephews, Seth Montgomery and Houston Brown.
The graveside service for Helen Marie Duncan will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. David Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow the service.

JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Sarah Lorene Johnson Adkins, age 96, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, went to join Jesus on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Abundant Christian Living Community. Lorene was born on April 24, 1925, to Thomas D. Johnson and Mary Kathryn Duncan Johnson.
Lorene met and married John Clifton Adkins and they were married August 25, 1953. Lorene and Cliff made their home in Erwin, Tennessee before moving to Elkhorn City, Kentucky, where Cliff worked on Clinchfield Railroad and Lorene maintained the home. After Cliff passed away in 1992, Lorene came back to Jonesborough, Tennessee, to make her home.
In addition to her husband, Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and one brother.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Edward Glenn Adkins and David Clifton Adkins and wife, Michelle. Lorene was blessed with two grandchildren, Logan Adkins and fiancé, Allison Dyer and her son Aiden McGinley, granddaughter, Shelby Briane Adkins Oakley and her husband, Chris. She also was survived by one brother, Charles Thomas Johnson and wife, Brenda Johnson.

Graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Erwin, on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 11:00 AM.

He was born on June 9, 1937, in Carter County, Tenn., a son of the late Floyd Watson Cole and the late Savada Melinda Miller Cole.

Willie was a simple man with a kind heart and a helpful nature. He loved to listen to Bluegrass Gospel Music and pick his guitar.

Merle Church Irick, 82, of Elizabethton, Tenn., took the hand of her precious Lord to join her loved ones before her on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center. Merle was born in Carter County, Tenn., on May 19, 1939, a daughter of the late Norman and Louise Miller Church. In addition to her parents, Merle was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack Irick; a son, Thomas Irick; three brothers, Rev. Dennis Church, Owen Church and Leslie Church; and one sister, Judy Church Parlier.
Merle retired as a truck driver and was a faithful member of Elk Mills Christian Church. She dedicated her entire life to God and her family and was a former youth leader for her church. In her later years, Merle taught the teenage class at Elk Mills Christian Church and worked tirelessly with the Helping Hands Organization.
Those left to continue Merle’s legacy and cherish her memory include two sons, Jeffrey Irick and wife Heidi of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Larry Irick and wife Dawn of Tazewell, Va.; one daughter, Lynn Irick of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Joshua, Amber, Justin and Brandon Irick, Jordan and David Whitehead; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Keith Church and wife Reba, and Tony Church and wife Debbie Hardin Church; one sister, Nancy Church Harmon and husband Darrell; a beloved sister-in-law, Nona Church; a bonus daughter, Neta Hurley; and a bonus son, Jerry Irick. A service to honor and celebrate Merle’s life will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 6, at Elk Mills Christian Church with her brothers, Mr. Tony Church and Mr. Keith Church, officiating. Music will be provided by Keith and Reba Church, Heidi Mollers Irick and Jordan Whitehead. The family will receive friends at the church from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Monday, prior to the service. Dennis Church, age 78, of Elk Park, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2019, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone. He was born on Oct. 19, 1941, in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Norman R. and Louis M. Church. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one Daughter: Belinda Church; two Brothers: Leslie and Owen Church; and one Sister: Judy Parlier.

Dennis Church was a great man of faith and loved by all who had the privilege of being in his presence. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1960 where he was a member of the track team. Sometime after he graduated, his Grandma Church told him he would be her preacher. Turns out she was right. He pastored many churches in his lifetime, the most recent being Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church in the Beech Mountain Community for the better part of the past 26 years. He loved God and his family.

Dennis was faithful and devoted to his church and his friends. He was an amazing father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved preaching and working in his flower and vegetable gardens. If ever there was an angel to walk this earth, it was him. He is loved and will be missed by everyone. In his words and how he ended all his posts, God is Good.

Owen Ray Church, 60, of Butler, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital unexpectedly.

He was a native of Butler, Tennessee and the son of the late Norman and Louise Miller Church. He was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church. Mr. Church was a carpenter and was a U S Army Veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Reba Church, four brothers, three sisters, two special nieces and several other nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at 2 pm, Saturday, July 26, at Beech Mountain Baptist Church with Rev Dennis Church, Mr. Keith Church and Mr. Andy Porter officiating.

Judy Evelyn Parlier, 66, of Montezuma, passed away, Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

She was born a daughter of the late Norman and Louise Miller Church on March 28, 1944 in Carter County, Tennessee. She worked for many years as the Program Coordinator for Yellow Mountain Enterprises. She was a member of the Crossnore First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Owen Ray Church and a sister in law, Judy Church.

Kenneth H. Cable, 76, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, March 24, 2013, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Cable was a follower and lover of Jesus. He was a member of Piney Flats Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death his wife, Annice Cable; two brothers: Junior and Bill Cable; two sisters: Shirley Heaton and Iva Lee Briggs.

Mrs. Helen "Mitzi" Toney, age 62, 134 Pinnacle Drive, Elizabethton, TN, passed away peacefully at her home Friday, October 25, 2013. A native of Washington County, TN, she was the daughter of the late John Jackson and Lethia Birchfield Cable.
She received a diploma from the TN College of Applied Technology as an Administrative Assistant. Mrs. Toney was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church and she was a member of the National Guard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Christine Cable, Shirley Heaton and Ivalee Briggs; and three brothers, Bill Cable, Junior Cable and Kenneth Cable. Survivors include her husband, James Toney, of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth Toney Jones and husband, Michael Todd Jones, Jonesborough, TN; and three grandchildren, Ariella Jones, Aaron Jones and Mary Beth Jones, all of Jonesborough, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Elsie Marie Cable Buckingham, 84, of Gray, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Raven “Buck” Buckingham; parents, W.R. and Pauline Stout Cable; two sisters, Wilma Yap and Trilla Mottern; paternal grandparents, William Millard and Sarah Ellen Davis Cable; and maternal grandparents, John R. and Lillie Belle Gilliland Stout.
Left to honor her memory are two sons, Charles Raven Buckingham II and Timmy Lynn Buckingham (Cindy); three granddaughters, Makayla (Raven), Dakota and Taylor (Tim and Cindy); one brother, Lowell Cable; and sisters Theona Moorehouse, Joan Anderson (Ward), Connie Latner (Donnie) and Sherri Lawson (Tim); along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Marie was a graduate of Jonesborough High School and attended East Tennessee State University. Marie and Buck were married March 19, 1959. She was a long-distance operator for Southern Bell Telephone, a bookkeeper and teller for First People’s Bank, a bookkeeper and teller for Banking & Trust, and retired from ETSU’s Sherrod Library cataloguing department in technical services.
Marie was a member of Kingsport Church of Christ. She was very strong in her faith and in her love of family; her granddaughters were the light of her life. Her love of family spiked her interest in genealogy, a lifelong passion. She published her decades-long research of the Cable family in 2001; she dedicated it, in part, to her sons for enduring a cluttered dining room table for years and to Connie and Donnie Latner for their expertise and patience teaching Marie how to use a computer to make this voluminous work possible. The book has become a treasure, not only to her immediate family, but to many distant relatives who research their own families’ histories. For many years, she was instrumental in organizing the Cable Family Reunion in Cranberry, N.C. Marie loved to cook and was an avid collector of recipes which she enthusiastically tried and shared with friends and family.
Family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Tetrick Funeral Home in Johnson City, followed by the funeral service at 7 p.m. officiated by Donnie Cable. Leslie Montgomery will lead congregational singing. Burial will be at noon Tuesday, March 22, at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City. Danny Ray Cable, age 70, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from his residence. Danny was born in Carter County to the late Millard William Cable and Mary Bell Stout Cable. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Elwood Von Cable.

Danny had worked as a butcher for 17 years at Smithdeals and had also worked at Snap-On-Tools of Elizabethton for over 16 years. He was a United States Navy veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a man of God and was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed camping, hiking, being outdoors, farming and helping those in need.

Jesse Clinton Cable, age 75 of Butler, TN, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2020 at his home. Jesse was born on November 4, 1944 to the late Coy Cable and Mae Stout Cable in Carter County, TN. In addition to his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Cable and wife Sharon, Clinton Cable, David Cable all of who were involved in a fatal car accident in 1987. He was also preceded in death by his daughter in law, Kathy Cable and granddaughter, Renee Shore.

Jesse was a veteran of the United States Army. He was also in the restaurant business for many years running the Elk Mills Restaurant. He had a passion for gardening and especially raising beans. Through his life, Jesse made many friends and will be dearly missed by all. He was member of the Stout Hill Church of Christ.

Coy Clinton Guy, 77, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at his residence.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Hazel Cable Guy.
Mr. Guy retired as a forklift operator at McCloud Lumber Company. He was a member and Deacon of God's House Full Gospel Church. Coy loved gospel music, playing the guitar and singing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Annie Pearl Thomas Guy; two sons, Jamie and Wade Guy; a step-daughter, Melinda Thomas; and a sister, Cleo Clawson.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Oaks Guy; three sons, Leon Guy and wife Sheila, Rev. JoAnn Guy Trivette, 69, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to join her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 20, 2019, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. JoAnn was born in Butler, Tenn., to the late Charlie and Hazel Cable Guy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a beloved granddaughter, Bethany Holder; two great-granddaughters, Sidney Harrell and Christie White; two dear sisters, Cleo Guy and Elsie Oxendine; and a dear brother, Coy Guy.
JoAnn had the biggest heart and her humble nature will live on in memory by those who met her. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed dearly. JoAnn was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church in the Buntontown Community. She loved fishing and being outside, but most especially she loved seeing and spending time with her family and singing.

Mr. Potter was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Millard and Bessie Potter. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Phillips Potter, a son, David Potter, three brothers, Enoch, Roy and Noah Potter, and a sister, Ellen Potter.
Mr. Potter was of the Baptist faith and a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Betty Potter, Elizabethton; a sister, Gladys Trivette, Maryville; a half sister, Kathy Harmon, Hampton; eight nephews, Jeff Potter, Lenoir, N.C., Bobby Trivette, Butler, Dale Potter, Maryville, Micheal Trivette, Roan Mountain, Terry Potter, Elizabethton, Paul Potter, Butler, Wayne Potter, Salisbury, N.C., and Rick Potter; two nieces, Phyllis Stanley, Highpoint, N.C., and Wanda Passmore, Butler; a grandson, David Potter II, Fresno, Calif.; a granddaughter, Tamara Potter, Fresno, Calif.; and several dear friends.

Dennis Potter, age 71, of Buckeye Road, Elk Park, passed away Thursday evening, February 15, 2018, at his home.

Dennis was born Feb. 24, 1946, in Carter County, Tenn., a son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Potter and Dovie Pearson Potter. Dennis was a member of Stone Mountain Missionary Baptist Church and a retired stonemason. His work spanning all over Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. He took great pride in a job well done. He taught the trade to both his sons, along with many others. Though he had a great love for creating masterpieces out of rock, his greatest love was his family. He loved each and everyone unconditionally. He had a way of making each child, daughter-in-law, grandchild, friend and neighbor feel like they were just a little more special than others. His unconditional love always stretched out his hand to strangers in need and folks down on their luck. He was certainly a good Samaritan to all.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Wanda Stines Potter of the home; two sons, Randy Potter and wife Patsy, and Jackie Potter and wife Brenda, all of Elk Park; five sisters, Dolly Harmon and husband Wayne of Butler, Mary Estep and husband Rev. Howard Estep of Elizabethton, Linda Potter, Gayle Ashley and Betty Hill and husband Daniel, all of Johnson City; one brother, Larry Potter of Butler; a brother-in-law and best friend, Carl Cable of Elizabethton; one sister-in-law, Betty Jo Glover; three granddaughters, Miranda Stoeltzing and husband Josh of Roan Mountain, Kayla Potter of Blowing Rock, and Amber Hoilman and husband Cody of Linville; one grandson, Joey Potter of Elk Park, and a very special great-grandson, Parker Stoeltzing. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death three brothers, Ray Potter, Ralph Potter, and James "Red" Glover, and one sister, Gracie Potter Cable.

Funeral services for Dennis Potter were conducted at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body lay in state, at the chapel, from 6 to 8 p.m. Rev. Buddy Street and Rev. Howard Estep officiated. Graveside services and burial were conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at Stone Mountain Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Elk Mills, Tenn.

HAMPTON - Ray Luther Walsh, 93, Hampton, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2021 at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Riley L. & Madgie Stout Walsh. Ray was a 1945 graduate of the Watauga Academy, Butler. He served in the United States Army during World War II and the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired Millwright and Mechanic. He was a member of Harmony Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Selma Marlow, Christine Stout, Lois, and Barbara Woodin and four brothers: Lee Walsh, Riley Walsh, Berl Walsh, and Alvin Walsh.

Margery Gladys (Stout) Church of Johnson City, Tenn., formerly of the Poga Community of Butler, Tenn., passed away peacefully at Ivy Hall Nursing Home on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, to spend her Valentine’s Day with her beloved husband, Allen, at the age of 93. Margie was born in the Elk Mills Community to the late William Haskell and Lona Andes Stout. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Allen Chester Church; two brothers, William Haskell Stout Jr. and Ray Stout; and five sisters, Dorothy Stout, Dee Tucker, Joy Pennington, Jean Miller and Sandra Miller. Margery loved children and teaching them was a natural born talent for her. She had worked at Elk Mills School for three years as a cook and retired from Little Milligan School where she worked as a teacher’s aide for 17 years. Many beautiful relationships with the teachers and children were forged at those schools and those student’s cherished memories will always include Margery. She was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church and loved her church family and most of all being a servant of the Lord. Margery had been a farmer her entire life and loved gardening in her flowers and vegetables and reading. She was a beautiful, kind and meek soul and will be deeply missed by everyone that knew her because her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Those left to cherish her legacy include her son, Michael Church of Johnson City; her daughter, Sherry Church Lewis of Wilmington, N.C.; her grandchildren, Stephanie Lewis, Miranda (Shawn) Wulf, India Lewis and Chase Lewis; one great-granddaughter, Aria Wulf; two great-grandsons, Tristan and Cameron; and a brother, Donnie Stout. Dorothy “Dot” Marie Stout, 89, formerly of the Poga Community in Butler, Tenn., passed away on Friday, March 26, 2021, at Good Samaritan Assisted Living in Kissimmee, Fla. She was a daughter of the late William Haskell and Lona Marie Andes Stout and was born in Carter County on April 8, 1931. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Delores “Janet” Tucker, Jean Miller, Joy Pennington and Sandra Miller, and two brothers, Ray Haskell Stout and William Haskell Stout Jr.
Those left to cherish her memory include one brother, Don Stout of Orlando, Fla., and one sister, Margie G. Stout Church of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Dorothy “Dot” Marie Stout will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Stout Hill Church of Christ in Poga with Mr. Donnie Cable, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m., prior to the funeral. Anna Smith, 93, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Hermitage Health Care Center of Elizabethton. Anna was born in Richlands, Va., to the late Leroy and Alice Greer Stout. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Cecil Smith; a brother, Homer Stout; and two sisters, Nell Stout and Ethel Stout.
Anna had been employed at Bemberg for 34 years and had also worked for the Senior Citizens Center, the Neighborhood Service Center and the United Way. She was of the Freewill Baptist faith and was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center. Anna enjoyed quilting and sewing and she loved to shop.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Sandra Lyons and husband Wayne of Elizabethton; and three grandchildren, Wayne Lyons II and fiancée, Ashley Bailey of Elizabethton, Emily Lyons of Bristol, Va., and Chelsea Lyons of Elizabethton.
A service to celebrate the life of Anna Smith will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 27, in the Fireside Room of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Shirley Anne Curde passed away and went to be with her Lord on April 10, 2022 after a long difficult battle with several illnesses. Born October 22, 1935, she was lovingly known as Moma,Nana, Curly, and Daisy Mae . She celebrated her 86th year of life this past year and will be missed by many in the Carter County community.
Shirley was a faithful member at First Christian Church in Elizabethton and a former member at Brick Christian Church in Watauga. She served as secretary at both churches.
She graduated from and played basketball for Elizabethton High School and Milligan College. For many years she then played softball in church and city leagues. She sang and led choirs and loved to be outdoors. Shirley worked at the Elizabethton Health Department for 36 years, then as Regional Health Department Director.
Shirley is proceeded in death by her parents, Virgil and Ada Bowers and by her loving husband of 59 years, Bruce Curde. She will be lovingly remembered by those left behind: Sister Nancy White, Brother David Bowers, Daughter Leslie Brockley (husband Randy), daughter Cindy Brown (husband Bob), Grandchildren Rachelle Ott, Jason Peters (wife Erin), and Matthew Ott (wife Brittany), Aaron and Anna Brockley and Amanda and Randy Brown, great grandchildren Jordan Seljouki, Natalie and Eli Peters, Madison and Kaleb Ott, and Wesley and Winnie Brockley. She is also survived by sisters-in-laws Dorothy McLain, Sonja Smalling (husband Doug) and Chris Greer, and her beloved dog, Buddy.
The service for Shirley Curde will be held at Memorial Funeral Chapel, on April 15, 2022 at 1 p.m. with Mr. Jeff Campbell, Minister and Mr. Michael Klaus, Minister, officiating; special music by Gene & Carolyn Estep and Ray Don Markland; Scripture reading and Eulogy: Jason Peters and Rachelle Ott. On Wednesday, January 19, 2022, a precious soul returned to her Savior and her family gone before her. Bernice Belle Hatley Whaley, 89, of the Elk Mills Community in Butler, Tenn., passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Hillview Health and Rehabilitation Center of Elizabethton. Bernice was born to the late Clifford Filmore Stout and Bonnie Rose Potter Stout. In addition to her father and mother, Bernice was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul O’Dell Hatley; her beloved brothers, Charles (Christine) Stout and Beryl Stout; a special nephew, Johnny Stout; several aunts and one uncle; and a son-in-law, Ralph Edison Miller.
Bernice was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was a sweet lady and always had a smile on her face and a kind word for anyone she met but she was firm as well. Hard work and charity was a way of life for Bernice and her willingness to obey the Lord and his word was instilled in her at a young age. She was a member of Elk Mills Christian Church.
Bernice was an integral part of her community and in her neighbors’ lives because anytime any of them were in need, Bernice was there to lend a helping hand. She was a bus driver for the Carter County School System and also worked as an inspector at C&A Lingerie. Bernice loved to dance when she was able, crocheting, sewing, and playing cards and Chinese checkers. Her greatest joy was her family and spending time with them. In fact, Bernice helped raise her granddaughter, Abbi, and it was her joy to do so.
Those left to cherish Bernice’s beautiful legacy include her husband, Luther Whaley, of the home; her daughters, Pat (Eddie) Clawson and Paulette Hatley Miller; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jason Edward (Amber) Clawson and their daughters, Lucchese Lee Clawson and soon-to-be Sage McKinley Clawson, Angela Michelle Walsh (Sam Maney) and her daughter, Abigail Summer Blevins, and Michael Vincent (Michele) Walsh and their daughter, Faith Walsh; and her very special friends, Doug and Kelley Carter.

Elsie Marie Cable Buckingham, 84, of Gray, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Raven “Buck” Buckingham; parents, W.R. and Pauline Stout Cable; two sisters, Wilma Yap and Trilla Mottern; paternal grandparents, William Millard and Sarah Ellen Davis Cable; and maternal grandparents, John R. and Lillie Belle Gilliland Stout.
Left to honor her memory are two sons, Charles Raven Buckingham II and Timmy Lynn Buckingham (Cindy); three granddaughters, Makayla (Raven), Dakota and Taylor (Tim and Cindy); one brother, Lowell Cable; and sisters Theona Moorehouse, Joan Anderson (Ward), Connie Latner (Donnie) and Sherri Lawson (Tim); along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Marie was a graduate of Jonesborough High School and attended East Tennessee State University. Marie and Buck were married March 19, 1959. She was a long-distance operator for Southern Bell Telephone, a bookkeeper and teller for First People’s Bank, a bookkeeper and teller for Banking & Trust, and retired from ETSU’s Sherrod Library cataloguing department in technical services.
Marie was a member of Kingsport Church of Christ. She was very strong in her faith and in her love of family; her granddaughters were the light of her life. Her love of family spiked her interest in genealogy, a lifelong passion. She published her decades-long research of the Cable family in 2001; she dedicated it, in part, to her sons for enduring a cluttered dining room table for years and to Connie and Donnie Latner for their expertise and patience teaching Marie how to use a computer to make this voluminous work possible. The book has become a treasure, not only to her immediate family, but to many distant relatives who research their own families’ histories. For many years, she was instrumental in organizing the Cable Family Reunion in Cranberry, N.C. Marie loved to cook and was an avid collector of recipes which she enthusiastically tried and shared with friends and family.
Family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Tetrick Funeral Home in Johnson City, followed by the funeral service at 7 p.m. officiated by Donnie Cable. Leslie Montgomery will lead congregational singing. Burial will be at noon Tuesday, March 22, at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City. A Memorial Service for Bruce Wayne Parlier will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday Feb. 9, 2020, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. up until the service hour at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Inurnment will follow in Beech Mountain Cemetery on Dark Ridge Rd.

On Sunday, December 11, 2022 our most precious mother, daughter, sister and friend, Sherry Leigh Cable, opened her eyes in the presence of her Heavenly father, her beloved Dad and Mom in her forever home in glory at the age of 55.Sherry was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., but was raised in the Elk Mills Community of Butler by her loving parents, Carl Allen Cable and Gracie Mae (Potter) Cable. She had mourned their loss tremendously.
Sherry was so much more than a mother, she was a friend, a confidant, and the rock of her family. She was the go-to for a pep talk, a cheerleader for achievements and the voice of reason in the midst of pain or troubles. Though she herself went through so much pain but emotionally and physically, Sherry always found time for what really mattered the most, family and family was her friends as well. She believed that everyone should be treated with kindness and respect which is exactly what she did.
Sherry was a graduate of Hampton High School and was retired from the Internal Revenue Service. She was of the Baptist faith and had attended Sunset Freewill Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish her memory is her devoted and loving daughter, Brittany Cable, of the home; her beloved brother, Terry Cable, also of the home; her aunts, who were more like sisters, Mary Potter Estep (Howard), Linda Potter, Betty Potter Hill (Daniel), and a very special aunt and best friend, Gayle Potter Ashley, all of Elizabethton; an uncle, Opal Cable of Butler; her bonus sister, Kristi Crow Smith; her special friend and godmother to Brittany, Patsy Crow; her special friends, Lisa Morrow, Missy Andrews Ward, Debbie Treadway, Angie Odom, Lori Church and Melissa Scalf.
A service to honor and celebrate Sherry’s beautiful homegoing will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday, December 17, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Rev. Terry Richardson and Rev. Howard Estep officiating. Special music will be provided by Vanessa Cox. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service.
Following the service, Sherry will be laid to rest beside her beloved mom and dad in the Stone Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery in the Poga Community of Butler. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Smith, Elijah Smith, Lee Morrow, Randy Potter, Jackie Potter, Chuck Pierce and Andy Montgomery. Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Estep, Opal Cable, Wayne Harmon, Bea Crow and Daniel Hill. We would like to thank the members of the Carter County Rescue Squad, members of the Hampton/Valley Forge Fire Department and the 2600 ICU & 5200 wing at the Johnson City Medical Center for the love and care shown to Sherry and her family.
