BUTLER - Lida Mabel Cable Barnes, 100, Butler, Tn. And Emerald isle, NC passed peacefully after a brave battle with cancer on the morning of April 3, 2021. Lida was born on May 29, 1920 to the late Captain Thomas William Cable, Sr. and Sallie Mae Reece Cable of Butler, Tenn. Lida served in the United States Navy from June 15, 1943 to November 16, 1945.She was discharged as a Pharmacist’s Mate First Class. Women were not allowed active duty at that time. She was a graduate of Watauga Academy and East Tennessee State College. She taught for a period of time at Watauga Academy, Butler. She received a degree as a Medical Technologist from Duke University. She was a member of Butler Baptist Church, Butler Chapter # 218, Order of Eastern Star, DAR Otway Burns Chapter and Women Veterans of Coastal North Carolina. In addition to her parents, Lida was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Robert B. Barnes who passed away April 3, 2007, son Tom Barnes, a sister Ann Johnson, and brother Tom Cable.

Survivors include her daughter: Patricia Barnes of Emerald Isle, NC; three granddaughters: Jennifer (Kevin) Snyder of Raleigh, NC, Nikki (Brian) Gant, Marion, NC and Stacy (Lee) Wheeler of Tuscon, AZ; and six great grandchildren. Niece: Brenda Saunders, nephew David Johnson. Several great nieces and great nephews.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2021 in Butler Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Daniel Wood officiating. Music will be provided by Chris Hughes. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at Butler Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday will be: Brian Gant, William Gant, David McIntosh, David Markland, Phil Babb, Steve Forrester and Alvin Woodby. Anna Ruth Atwood, age 88, of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 30, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born on March 27 1929 in Johnson County, TN to the late Isaac Cable and Hessie White Cable. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sisters, Edith Brown and Kate Kyte and brother Joe Cable.

Anna Ruth is survived by three daughters: Elizabeth Wallace and husband Terry, Patricia Tester and husband Doyle and Brenda Curbey; two sons: Robert Atwood and wife Georeta and Freddie Atwood; eight grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren, one sister, Yvonne Phillips, several nieces and nephews.

Anna Ruth's request was for a graveside service to be held. Service will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday January 2, 2018 at Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Don Winters officiating. Pallbearers will be; Craig Tester, Doyle Tester, John Gordon, Doug Trivette, Terry Wallace and Len Wallace.

JOHNSON CITY — Mr. Fred Douglas Duncan, 89, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Hermitage Health Center.

He was the son of the late W.A. and Eliza Greenwell Duncan, Sr. and was born in Old Butler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Harrison and a brother, W.A. Duncan, Jr.

Mr. Duncan attended Watauga Academy, graduated from Elizabethton High School and also attended Steed College of Business. He worked at May Mead Lime Company of Mountain City, Giant Food Markets, Winn Dixie and retired from United Oil Company. Following his retirement he repaired clocks. He was a faithful member of Calvary and Sinking Creek Baptist Churches.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Arcadia Floyd Duncan of the home; a sister, Helen Duncan of Elizabethton, a nieces Brenda Brown, a great niece, Lisa Montgomery, a great-nephew, Joe Brown, great-great nephews, Seth and Cody Montgomery and Houston Brown, all of Hampton. He also leaves a host of cousins and friends.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Duncan will be conducted on Thursday, February 18, 2016, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. David Montgomery and Rev. Cody Montgomery officiating. Music will be under the direction of Seth and Cody Montgomery.

The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 19, 2016, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Donnie Mitchell, Larry Lewis, David Cannon and others selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the men's Sunday School Class of Sinking Creek Baptist Church.

Helen Marie Duncan, 88, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness.
A native of Butler, she was a daughter of the late William Andrew Duncan Sr. and Eliza Greenwell Duncan.
Helen was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a retired secretary for the U.S. Navy Department in Washington, D.C. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Harrison; two brothers, WA Duncan Jr. and Fred Duncan; and a great-nephew, Cody Montgomery.
Survivors include a niece, Brenda H. Brown; a great-niece, Lisa Brown Montgomery and husband David; a great-nephew, Joe Brown Jr.; and two great-great-nephews, Seth Montgomery and Houston Brown.
The graveside service for Helen Marie Duncan will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. David Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow the service.

Rev. Russell Millard Potter, 91, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord Saturday, December 8, 2012, in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

Born March 31, 1921, in Carter County, Tennessee, he was a son of the late William Millard and Pearl Bunton Potter. He was preceded in death by his wife: Hazel Trivette Potter; his father-in-law: Linzy Trivette; a daughter-in-law: Linda McKeehan Potter; Three sisters: Velta Potter, Donnis Hicks, Danford Bowman; and four brothers: Kyle, Bernard, Clay and Ree Potter.

He was a member of the Meadowview Baptist Church. Rev. Potter gave his life to Christ at a young age and joined his family's home church, Meadowview Baptist Church in Buntontown, Tn. In 1942, at the age of 21 he was ordained into the Baptist Ministry at Elk River Baptist Church.

His ministry spanned for 70 years until his death on December 8, 2012, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. Ivy Hall was a place that was dear to his heart, having ministered there for 51 years, as well as Hillview, Hermitage and Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

Rev. Potter had pastored several churches in the area, his first church, Dividing Ridge Baptist Church, Walnut Mountain Baptist Church, Dyson Grove Baptist Church, Fish Springs Baptist Church, Walnut Grove Baptist Church, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and at his death was pastor and founder of Long Hollow Baptist Church.

Rev. Potter conducted the "Old Time Gospel Hour," his radio Ministry of more than 40 years which was heard on WBEJ, WIDD, Pan American Broadcast in Africa and Currently on WZAP in Bristol.

He was educated at Elk Mills High School, Watauga Academy and East Tennessee State College. He taught school in the Johnson and Carter County School Systems. He was owner of Potter and Potter Evergreen Co. and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a son: Aaron M. Potter; and Two Daughters: Janet Peters and husband, Ed, Lavonia Austin and husband, Raymond; Two Granddaughters: Mariana Robinson and husband, David, and Wendy Gifford and husband, Mike; Two Grandsons: Dan Potter, Scott Sams and wife, Kim; Two Great Granddaughters: Kaeli Sams and Brittany Robinson; Two Great Grandsons: Jordan and Triston Gifford; Four Step Great Grandchildren: Haley Gifford, Savanna Blevins, Colby Britt and Steven Austin; Special Cousin: Mable Snavely. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012, in the Meadowview Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Jones, Rev. Mark Potter and Rev. Ray Greene officiating.

A native of Avery County, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Walter Andes, Sr. and Elizabeth Potter Andes.
She had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. She was retired from Quick Cleaners and formerly worked at several restaurants in Elizabethton.
She attended the Church of the Living Savior.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Charles Andes; two sisters, Flora Slagle and Juanita Carroll, and two great grandchildren, Morley Skeens and Scotty Perry.
Survivors include her husband, Larry M. Taunton; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Eastes, Lafayette, La., and Sonja Perkins, Johnson City; four sons, Roy, Clarence, Jerry and Terry Perry, all of Elizabethton; two step-daughters, Laurale Hopkins, Salem, Ore., and April Ball, Elizabethton; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and six step-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mable Andes Snavely died Saturday, October 8, 2022 surrounded by family. Mamaw was one-of-a-kind. She loved fiercely, worked hard, and was honest to a fault. She loved her church family and faithfully attended Borderview Christian Church. For Mamaw, each day began with her Jesus Calling devotional and time spent with God in the Bible. Death did not rob her from us. Indeed, at 98 years old, she has simply graduated to her real home to her true spouse Jesus Christ, who had a place ready-and-waiting for her in heaven.

Mamaw loved to play any kind of game, and would rub-it-in when she won. She loved traveling and could have a bag packed to “hit the road” in minutes. Mamaw knew that all the good we experience in life points to the perfection she now experiences with her Savior. Her life was a testament that true blessings are not material.

Mamaw was rich in that God had graciously blessed her with a wonderful and extensive family. The mother of three girls, Mamaw leaves behind Joyce and Phil Grindstaff, Susie McLeod, and June and John Gouge. Grandchildren include Wendy and Jeff Salyers; Jennifer and David Martin; Julie and Jon Wilcox; Scott and Marla McLeod; Kym and David Townsend; Tim and Carla McLeod; Heather and Levon Mouradian; and Andrew and Lindsey Gouge. Great-grandchildren include Ellie and Cade Salyers, David and Shelly Martin, Hank Wilcox, Banner and McKenzie McLeod, Skye McLeod, Emily McLeod and Landon Falconer, Dalita, Siamanto, Lilit, and Leona Mouradian, and Cole and Norah Gouge. Her great-great-grandchildren are Lily, Jolie, and Judah Martin. Mable also leaves behind one sister-in-law, Blanche Nicholson and several nieces and nephews. Mable is preceded in death by her husband, James Ray Snavely (Jim), great-grandson Adam Martin, two brothers, four sisters, and her parents, Joseph Andes and Sarah Elizabeth Potter Andes, and her dear friend, Earl Ellis.

A service to celebrate the life of Mable Andes Snavely will be conducted at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Scott Fisher and Pastor Dan Foster officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Borderview Christian Church Quartet. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM prior to the funeral service on Tuesday.

Lorene and Cliff made their home in Erwin, Tennessee before moving to Elkhorn City, Kentucky, where Cliff worked on Clinchfield Railroad and Lorene maintained the home. After Cliff passed away in 1992, Lorene came back to Jonesborough, Tennessee, to make her home.
In addition to her husband, Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and one brother.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Edward Glenn Adkins and David Clifton Adkins and wife, Michelle. Lorene was blessed with two grandchildren, Logan Adkins and fiancé, Allison Dyer and her son Aiden McGinley, granddaughter, Shelby Briane Adkins Oakley and her husband, Chris. She also was survived by one brother, Charles Thomas Johnson and wife, Brenda Johnson.

Graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Erwin, on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 11:00 AM.

Robert Stanley Atwood, 73, passed away on March 22, 2021 while traveling in Costa Rica. Robert was born on September 7, 1947 in Butler, TN to George Atwood and Anna Ruth (Cable). He was an Army veteran that served in Vietnam. After serving in the army, he settled in Warsaw, OH and worked as a boilermaker for more than 30 years. After retiring, he settled in Hobe Sound, FL to enjoy the sun and sea. His greatest pleasures were spending time with family and friends, sharing his knowledge and expertise, and traveling the world. Robert was a kind person, who never turned down a friend in need.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna Ruth (Cable), and his sister Brenda Curbey. He is survived by his children, Anthony (Danielle) and Jonathan (Natividad), wife Georgeta, his brother William Fred (Naneth), George Atwood, his two sisters Patricia Tester (Doyle), Elizabeth Wallace (Terry), Laura Baker, two stepchildren, Dana Hall and Horia Paun and many nieces and nephews, as well as a special longtime friends, Gill and Karen. He was the cherished grandfather of Drake, Dezlynn, Tony and Darian Atwood. Pallbearers are Denny Jester, Benjamin Atwood, Terry Wallace, and John Gordon.

A graveside service with full military honors will take place on Saturday, April 3rd, 2021 at Sugar Grove Church Cemetery Butler, TN.

Brenda Sue Atwood Curbey, 60, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, July 23, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. She was born February 21, 1958 in Elizabethton to the late George and Anna Ruth Cable Atwood. She had lived in Butler for several years before moving to Elizabethton.
Brenda was a 1975 graduate of Johnson County High School. She was a homemaker and in earlier years she was employed at Pizza Inn. She was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Layla Trivette and husband Doug and Lana Curbey, all of Hampton; two grandchildren, Alyiah Trivette and Kaylee Graybeal; three sisters, Patricia Tester and husband Doyle and Elizabeth Wallace and husband Terry, all of Butler, and Lora Lee Baker of Kentucky; three brothers, Robert Atwood and wife Georgeta Paun of Florida, Freddie Atwood and wife Naneth of Elizabethton, and George Atwood of Ohio; several nieces and nephews; the father of her children, Jeff Curbey; and a special friend, Charles Julian.
Funeral services for Brenda Sue Atwood Curbey will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Morefield officiating. On Wednesday, January 19, 2022, a precious soul returned to her Savior and her family gone before her. Bernice Belle Hatley Whaley, 89, of the Elk Mills Community in Butler, Tenn., passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Hillview Health and Rehabilitation Center of Elizabethton. Bernice was born to the late Clifford Filmore Stout and Bonnie Rose Potter Stout. In addition to her father and mother, Bernice was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul O’Dell Hatley; her beloved brothers, Charles (Christine) Stout and Beryl Stout; a special nephew, Johnny Stout; several aunts and one uncle; and a son-in-law, Ralph Edison Miller.
Bernice was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was a sweet lady and always had a smile on her face and a kind word for anyone she met but she was firm as well. Hard work and charity was a way of life for Bernice and her willingness to obey the Lord and his word was instilled in her at a young age. She was a member of Elk Mills Christian Church.
Bernice was an integral part of her community and in her neighbors’ lives because anytime any of them were in need, Bernice was there to lend a helping hand. She was a bus driver for the Carter County School System and also worked as an inspector at C&A Lingerie. Bernice loved to dance when she was able, crocheting, sewing, and playing cards and Chinese checkers. Her greatest joy was her family and spending time with them. In fact, Bernice helped raise her granddaughter, Abbi, and it was her joy to do so.
Those left to cherish Bernice’s beautiful legacy include her husband, Luther Whaley, of the home; her daughters, Pat (Eddie) Clawson and Paulette Hatley Miller; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jason Edward (Amber) Clawson and their daughters, Lucchese Lee Clawson and soon-to-be Sage McKinley Clawson, Angela Michelle Walsh (Sam Maney) and her daughter, Abigail Summer Blevins, and Michael Vincent (Michele) Walsh and their daughter, Faith Walsh; and her very special friends, Doug and Kelley Carter.
The family wishes to invite Bernice’s friends and family to attend the visitation between the hours of 12 and 1 p.m., prior to the graveside service on Sunday, January 23. The graveside service will follow in the Bunton Cemetery with Rev. Gary Bowman officiating. Elsie Marie Cable Buckingham, 84, of Gray, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Raven “Buck” Buckingham; parents, W.R. and Pauline Stout Cable; two sisters, Wilma Yap and Trilla Mottern; paternal grandparents, William Millard and Sarah Ellen Davis Cable; and maternal grandparents, John R. and Lillie Belle Gilliland Stout.
Left to honor her memory are two sons, Charles Raven Buckingham II and Timmy Lynn Buckingham (Cindy); three granddaughters, Makayla (Raven), Dakota and Taylor (Tim and Cindy); one brother, Lowell Cable; and sisters Theona Moorehouse, Joan Anderson (Ward), Connie Latner (Donnie) and Sherri Lawson (Tim); along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Marie was a graduate of Jonesborough High School and attended East Tennessee State University. Marie and Buck were married March 19, 1959. She was a long-distance operator for Southern Bell Telephone, a bookkeeper and teller for First People’s Bank, a bookkeeper and teller for Banking & Trust, and retired from ETSU’s Sherrod Library cataloguing department in technical services.
Marie was a member of Kingsport Church of Christ. She was very strong in her faith and in her love of family; her granddaughters were the light of her life. Her love of family spiked her interest in genealogy, a lifelong passion. She published her decades-long research of the Cable family in 2001; she dedicated it, in part, to her sons for enduring a cluttered dining room table for years and to Connie and Donnie Latner for their expertise and patience teaching Marie how to use a computer to make this voluminous work possible. The book has become a treasure, not only to her immediate family, but to many distant relatives who research their own families’ histories. For many years, she was instrumental in organizing the Cable Family Reunion in Cranberry, N.C. Marie loved to cook and was an avid collector of recipes which she enthusiastically tried and shared with friends and family.
Family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Tetrick Funeral Home in Johnson City, followed by the funeral service at 7 p.m. officiated by Donnie Cable. Leslie Montgomery will lead congregational singing. Burial will be at noon Tuesday, March 22, at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City. David Ronnie Bowman, Sr., age 75, of Jonesborough, TN, went home to be with his Lord, Sunday, January 27, 2013 after a brief illness at the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was the son of the late Dana and Danford Potter Bowman, and attended Jonesborough High School and graduated in 1955. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Bowman served in the United States Army 29th Infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia from 1960-62. He worked in the bindery trade for many years before going to work for the United States Treasury where he retired after 18 years. Mr. Bowman loved hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Herrmann Argenbright.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jo Ann Godfrey Bowman; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Kim Bowman, Harwood, MD; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Barry Taylor, Edgewater, MD; a daughter and son-in-law Kim and Bill Lee, Shady Side, MD; a son and daughter-in-law Bryan and Christie Bowman, Edgewater, MD; a daughter and son-in-law, Nikki and Ken Rose, Craigsville, WV; one brother and five sisters, William Bowman, Sr. and Christine Lowe, Johnson City, Cara Moss (James), Harriman, Sue Rowland (David), Jonesborough; Jayne Brogdon (John Trivett), Elizabethton; a brother-in-law, James C. Aaron M Potter, beloved Father and Grandfather went to be with his lord and savior Friday April 12 following a year long fight with cancer.

Aaron was born August 27th 1945 the son of the late Reverend Russell Potter and Hazel Trivette Potter. He was the grandson of Linzie and Sarah Trivette and Millard and Pearl Potter. Aaron was a graduate of Hampton High School class of 1964. He is the husband of the late Linda Mckeehan Potter. He owned and operated D and A Motors for 39 years and worked at Nickels Performance Speedshop for several years. Aaron was also an active deacon at Long Hollow Baptist Church in Valley Forge where after each service brought tootsie roll candy to the children of the congregation.

Survivors include one son Dan Potter, a daughter Wendy Overman, son in law Tim Overman, 4 grandchildren who loved him very much, Jordan, Aaron Tristan, and Emma Overman as well as a step granddaughter Haley Glover. He is also survived by his sister Lavonia Austin, brother in law Ed Peters, father and Mother in Law Bud and Loretta Mckeehan ,niece Marina Robinson(husband David) and their daughter Brittany, nephew Scott Sams (wife Kim) and daughters Kaeli, Savanna, son Colbie. Niece Ashlee Mckeehan and Daughter Aubree, he also survived by several great nieces and nephews. And a host of cousins.

He is also survived by his girlfriend Mary Brickey of Johnson City. Two very close classmates Tip Smith and Glenn Cates, and very close friends Tony and Linda Bowers who helped throughout his illness.

In addition to his parents and wife he is also preceded in death by his younger sister Janet Potter Peters and brother in law Raymond V. Austin.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2019 in the Meadow View Baptist Church, Butler with the Rev. Ray Greene, Rev. Ken Houser and Rev. Charlie Trivette officiating. Interment will follow in the Buntontown Cemetery. Music will be provided by the Sounds of Victory, Everette & Cleta Garland and his daughter Wendy Overman. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles and Ida Ellis Andes.
David was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended ETSU. He was employed at Snap-on Tools. David was a member and Leading Knight of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge #1847. He attended Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church. His hobbies were fishing and golf.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark and Eddie Andes, and a sister, Barbara Hunter.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry McGowan Napier; three step-children, Jeremy Napier, Mark (Jessica) Napier and Jessica (Joseph) Carey; 11 grandchildren; his best friend, golfing and fishing buddy, Clarence Perry; and a nephew, Charles Andes.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, March 27, in the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Gene Fleanor officiating.
