    She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Roy William Hicks, of Gray; four daughters: Pam Feathers, of Johnson City, Cynthia Ann Torbett, of Gray, Peggy Laws, of Johnson City, and Nancy Marie Cox, of Gray; two sons: James William Hicks, of Gray, and Roy Allen Hicks, of Johnson City; sister: Thelma Ruland, of PA; brother: Luke Hamby, of Johnson City; grandchildren: Chris Campbell, Shannon Buchannon, Scott Hicks, Sheri Hicks, Clinton Torbett, Wesley Laws, Hannah Cox, James Hicks, Cody Hicks and Noah; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

    A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday at 8:00 PM in the Sunrise chapel with Rev. Adam Miller officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM prior to the service. A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Hicks grandsons. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 to go in procession.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Virginia Ailes, Eula Dowell, Verta Greer, Hazel Sluder, Opal Wood, Goldie Wood, Harold Dowell, Ralph Dowell, Charles Dowell, and Hayden Dowell and his grandson, Justin Robert Dowell.

    Jay retired from Lukens Steele Company and was a proud member of Local Union 1165 steel workers in Coatesville, PA after over 20 years of employment. Jay and his wife, Ethel were married in November of 1951 and built their new home in Mountain City when they were in their 70’s. He liked to crochet, collect coins and model trains, play guitar, and sang in church with his sisters and his daughter when he was younger. Jay was a member of the Pentecostal church in Vilas, NC and his faith was very important to him.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 71 years, Ethel Louise Dowell; daughter, Carolyn Steele of Lenoir, NC; sons, John Russell Dowell and wife Patti of Elkton, MD, Robert Dean Dowell and wife Rhonda of Elkton, MD, Charles Ray Dowell and wife Margaret of Mountain City; grandchildren, John Jr. (Lisa), Farrah, Tara, Tiffany, Jason (Erin), Amanda, Josh (Samantha); great grandchildren, Paige, Nolan, Gavin, Zander, Marissa, Gage, Jayde, Jackson, Daisy; great great grandchild, Bailee; several nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Terry Carver officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pardue and wife Pat and Danny Pardue, all of Zionville; and sisters, Margaret Grindstaff and husband, Danny, of Mountain City, Helen Pardue of Zionville, Patsy Courtner and husband, Jerry, of Mountain City, and Wanda Eldreth and husband, Bobby, of Todd. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ronnie and J.C. Pardue and sister-in-law, Francis Pardue.

    Funeral services held at Antioch Baptist Church in Mountain City, TN, officiated by Rev. Kenny Ray Vaught and Rev. Dwayne Tester. Graveside services with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 130 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Zionville, NC.

    JOHNSON CITY - Judy Hamby Carr, 75, of Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at Four Oaks Health Care. She was a native of Johnson City and daughter of the late Wiley and Mayme Ruth Head Hamby. In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded in death by her husband, James Leonard Carr.

    Those left to cherish Judy's memory include her son, Scott Lee Beaver and his wife Melody, grandson, Nicholas Montgomery, her brother, Ronnie, and sister, Linda, several nieces and nephews also survive.

    The family will greet friends to share memories on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 from 11:00 am until a Celebration of Judy's life at 1:00 pm in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City with Pastor Estel Williams officiating. A Graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm on Wednesday at Carr Cemetery in Watauga Flats. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
