The Will of Thomas DeLoach

22 June 1802


      Thomas DeLoach was born in Old Craven County, South Carolina, on 20 October 1759. He was one of five children of Thomas DeLoach, Sr. and his wife Patience Allison. He married his first wife, Mary ______, in about 1779, and they had eight children. He married his second wife, Sarah Watkins, in about 1801. Shortly following this marriage, he drew up the will shown below. He and Sarah had nine children. Sarah apparently predeceased Thomas, for at the time of his death in 1819, he was married to Charity Cotton.

In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Deloach preacher of the gospel and of the Baptist order and of the District aforesaid being in health of body and of sound memory and understanding, thanks be to God for the same. Do make this my last will and testament in the manner and form following. My will is that all my estate lands, goods, and chattels, profits, debts, dues, demands, and incomes shall remain in the hands of my beloved wife Sarah during her natural life or widowhood in order that she may be thereby enabled to school and educate my children but, and if my wife Sarah shall marry again, then my wish is that of my estate, real and personal, be sold on a cedit of twelve months and the money arising from such sales to be divided in the following manner (to wit) to my eight oldest children William Delach and Lucy Hunter and Catey Hunter and Thomas Deloach and Elizabeth Bush and John Deloach and Polly & Nancy. I give one dollar to each of them and the rest of Estate to be equally divided amongst my wife Sarah and her children which she may have by me, my wife to have a childs part, but and if my wife Sarah shall dec. without a second marriage, at her death, I leave my Estate to be sold in the manner that is aforesaid described and divided amongst my children as aforesaid, that is, my eight oldest children to have one dollar each of them and the rest to be equally divided amongst my children which I have got by my last wife Sarah and do nominate, constitute and appoint my said wife Sarah sole exect. of this my last will and testament surely revoking and making void all and every other will or wills at any time heretofore by me made and do declare this to be my last will and testament in tuess? where of I the said Thomas Deloach leave herewith at my hand and seal in the year of our Lord one thousand eight Hundred and two and on the twenty second day of June in the same year,it being thirty fourth & thirty fifth years of American Independence.
