The Will of James Goggins - 1843
Edgefield District, South Carolina


James Goggins/Goggans was born in South Carolina in about 1780. In about 1810, he married Sarah DeLoach, the daughter of Samuel DeLoach and Ferriby Burton. His will was written in 1843 and recorded in 1887.

In the name of God, Amen. I James Goggins of the State and District aforesaid being in my proper mind and memory, Calling to mind the mortality of my body, do dispose of my wordly Estate that it pleased the Lord to bless me with in the following manner-
First it is my desire that my beloved wife Sariah Goggins shall have my plantation or track of land on which I now live, Except one hundred acres lying on the north side of the Spring branch more or less adjoining lands of J. D. Smiths.
My desire is that my Son John Goggons shall have that part of the tract of land on which I now live when he arrives to twent one years of age.
My wife Sary Goggins shall have plantation tools, house hold and kitchen furniture, utensils, stock of Cattle, hogs sheep, and one horse and crop. This the said Sary Goggins shall have to do with as she thinks proper during her life or widowhood. Provided she should marry, all the Estate both household and real to be sold and divided Equal amongst my children, but the older one which have received a portion can't receive till youngers one receive up equal.
Isaac Goggins my Son who is liveing in the State of Alabama has had Eighty Dollars.
Henry Goggins my Son living in Georgia has had Sixty Dollars.
Wm. Goggins my Son living in same has recd. Fifty Dollars.
My daughter Matilda Mots has received Thirty Dollars.
My daughter Elizabeth Butler has recd. Twenty Five Dollars.
John Goggins the land is his share.
Rebeccah Goggins my daughter has received nothing.
James Goggins my son has recd nothing yet, but they my daughter Rebeccah and son James Goggin as is to be made up Equal when the property is sold.
I wish my grand daughter Milnder Mots to receive the resedue of Matilda Moteses part of the estate from the thirty dollars up which the said Matilda Motes has received.
Milnder Motes to receive one feather bed and furniture at valiation inpart instead of her mother Matilda Motes.
This is to remain in the posession of my wife Sarah Goggins during her life or widowhood, but at her death or marriage the property is to be sold and the proceeds disposed of as above directed.
I appoint and ordain my beloved wife Sarah Goggins sole Executrix of this my last will and Testament and at her death or marriage I appoint Henry Goggins and John Goggins Executors of this my last will and Testament, Revoking all other wills by me at any time heretofore set my hand and seal this eigth day of May, One thousand eight hundred and forth Three.
