Mr. J.T. De Loach,
703 West Court Street,
Winnfield, La. 71483
Dear Mr. De Loach:
The 1850 census for Catahoula Parish, La. shows a listing
(page 71, house 363) of the family of one Egbert De Loach, as
follows;
Where
Name Color Sex age Born
Egbert De Loach W M 40 Ky.
Ellen do W F 32 Miss
Lemuel do W M 14 Miss
Eliza do W F 12 Miss
Sarah do W F 10 La.
Eugene do W M 6 Tex
Martha do W F 4 La
James S do W M 6/12 La.
I note that the present Catahoula Parish is near Winn Parish where
your grandparents settled in the 1830's on coming from Yazoo County
Miss. It appears that the above named Egbert De Loach (born about
1810, in Kentucky) married Ellen about 1835 in Mississippi,
lived there until about 1839, and then moved to Louisiana. The census
record shows that he lived for a short time in Texas, where one of his
children was born, and returned to Louisiana before or during 1846.
The circumstances stated in your letter, together with the foregoing
indicate that the said Egbert De Loach was your grandfather Egbert H.
De Loach. However, there is a long span of years between the year of
his birth (about 1810) and the year of your birth (after 1891). If
that be true I would assume that your father (John Egbert De Loach)
was one of his youngest children, being born in the middle or late
1860's. It appears that Amanda Bullock was the second wife of
Egbert H. De Loach, being the mother of your father.
Egbert De Loach of Catahoula Parish, La., in 1850 probably was a
grandson of one William De Loach who migrated from Edgecombe County,
N.C., through Tennessee to Logan County, Ky., and arrived at the latter
place prior to or during 1796. He and his son Thomas were granted lands
on Clifty Creek in Logan County, Ky., in 1796 and 1804, respectively.
Egbert might have been the son of Thomas. William was the son of Samuel
and Mary (Boykin) De Loach of Edgecombe County. N.C.. Mrs. James E.
O'Donnell, whose mail address in 1959 was P.O. Box 462, Woodville, Miss.,
compiled a record of Samuel's descendents, and probably knows the gen-
ealogical position of your Egbert H. De Loach. I have Samuel's descen-
dants but very briefly in my records, since Mrs. O'Donnell was gather-
ing data to be published on that line.
There is an error in Mrs. 0'Donnell's record, in that she names the
above mentioned Samuel as a son of the William De Loach (Jr) and his
wife (Judith Wall) who moved from Edgecombe County, N.C. to the Welsh
Tract in Craven County S.C. in 1745. The said William (Jr),. my wife's
ancestor, and Samuel were first cousins and were about the same age.
Samuel's father was Thomas De Loach of Isle of Wight County,
Va., and this Thomas was an uncle of William (Jr.)
The immigrant ancestor of the De Loach (as the name became
anglicized) family in Virginia and other states was Michael
Deloge (or Desloges), and not Deloche, as many researchers and
writers have assumed. I have French and English records which show
these as the names of two separate and distinct families of
ancient France with derivation of the names, and different coats-
of-arms.
I would GUESS that your line of descent from the immigrant
De Loach ancestor is as follows:
1. Michael Deloge(Desloges) md. Jane Griffith.
2. Thomas De Loach (name anglicized) Md _____ _______
3. Samuel do Md. Mary Boykin.
4. William do Md. Purity Ruffin.
5. Thomas do Md. _____ _____ in 1829 of 1830
he went to Mississippi and settled
near Lexington in Holmes County
(adjoins Yazoo County) or about
20 miles northeast of Yazoo City.
6. Egbert H. De Loach Md (2) Amanda Bul.lock.
7. John Egbert Do Md. Kate Trichel Carver.
8. John. T. Do __________________
I regret that I cannot give you more definite information;
but I think Mrs. O'Donnell would help you with your problem if
you can get in touch with her.
Sincerely yours,
