The Henderson Frier Bible

Introduction

It is with much pride and pleasure that I am able to present to you a facsimile of the genealogical information contained in the Henderson Frier Bible.

I shall do my best to reproduce this information as it is in the Bible and also a more readable manner. As one can imagine, the paper shows its age as well as its sulfur content.

Please know that this book has withstood the ravages of time, insects, water and that of man.

Be not forgetting this Bible was there when Sherman marched through Georgia.

Henderson was 90 plus years old when he entered the death notice of his youngest child, Leacy Ann Dent nee Frier. Two months later he was dead at the age of ninety one less nine days.

Some stranger must have entered the death of Henderson for neither Joshua Hoyt Frier nor his younger brother Aaron Gains Frier would dare use the y in Frier when posting the death of their father. Both of these two sons lived near Henderson, and of course, were his close neighbors.

The homes of these three Frier people were on the "River Road" as it was known in those days. Today, portions of this rode still exist. Georgia Road # 107 as well as Burkets Ferry Road, which runs west out of Hazelhurst, Georgia, still use parts of this old right-a-way. Joshua is buried about fifty yards north of 107 (and three miles east of US 441) while Henderson is at rest about 150 yards north of Burkets Ferry Road and about 2.7 miles west of the control tower of the airport in Hazelhurst, Georgia.

After many miles and years of searching I finally tracked this very elusive book to Mrs. Sanella Cauchois of Hazelhurst, Georgia.

She having taken up residence in a retirement home was limited in space to keep any items, had given it to her niece Mrs. Virginia "Ginger" Turner of Hollywood, Florida for safe keeping.

In my adventures of searching for this Bible of my ancestor one of my trips had taken me as far as California while all the time, but unknown to me, this old leather bound volume was, practically in my own backyard. The joy of finding it is still with me. It was rebound as well as restored last summer (1984) by a professional bookbinder in Pennsylvania and is now in good condition.

There seems to be a preponderance of errors on this page. For example, the first entry:

"Issah Hansel married Laura Lucille Pattisere"

The correct name of the groom should read Isaiah and that of the bride "Laura Lucille Pellicer.

Then you might want to consider the spelling of Aaron's wife's name ie Narrica as opposed to the way Aaron spelled it - Narcessa. etc. etc.

This is the back of the second title page.

All writing on this sheet seems to be that of several children. Some in ink, but most in pencil.

There is one exception, the announcement of the birth of Aaron Tally Frier.
This resembles that of the same hand that wrote the announcement of A.G.
Frier being "Borned" which is found on on the front side of the second loose leaf.
