- Charles Wayne Scalf, age 61, of 132 Mayflower Rd, Johnson City, died Friday, October 23, 2009, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, due to injuries sustained in a trucking accident.
A native of Washington County, he was a son of the late John Aaron and Ruby Bell Bowers Scalf.
Charlie was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran having served during the Vietnam War where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He had worked as a truck driver and was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Danie Kissinger, a brother, John Scalf, Jr., a sister, Ruby Annalee Dulaney, and several half brothers and half sisters. Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Tresia Hensley Scalf, of the home; two sons, Jeffrey Scalf and wife, Taina, Peekskill, NY, and Steven Scalf, of the home; two granddaughters, Kayla and Maria Scalf, Peekskill, NY; a sister, Barbara Hammer and husband, Earl, Johnson City, and a brother, Harold "Dickie" Scalf and wife, Sheila, Watauga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home or at the residence other times. The funeral service for Mr. Scalf will be conducted at 12:30 P.M. Thursday, October 29, 2009, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph "Jody" Coontz officiating.
Graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #49 Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Bill Hammer, Keith Guinn, David Scalf, Larry Horton, Phillip Coontz, Patrick Sells, and Kyle Moran. Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers-in-law, Clarence Perry, Earl Hammer, and Jessie Hensley, and special friends, Bill Woodfin, Paul Darnell, and Hector Alicea.
