- JOHNSON CITY - John E. Scalf Jr., 68, of Juniper Cottage in Greeneville, died Wednesday at Greene Valley Developmental Center in Greeneville, where he had lived for the past 40 years.
Mr. Scalf was a native of Washington County who had lived most of his life in Greeneville. He was the son of the late Ruby (Bowers) and the Rev. John E. Scalf Sr.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Fred (Ruby) Dulaney; one nephew: Wayne Dulaney; and several half-brothers and half-sisters.
The family provided the following statement: "John loved attending church at New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church. He also attended Bible study at Greene Valley. He loved listening to gospel music and playing the guitar.
"John had also enjoyed coming to Johnson City with Vickie Stubblefield and Wayne Hyatt to eat with his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Earl Hammer."
Additional survivors include: two brothers and their wives: Harold and Shelia Scalf of Watauga and Charles and Tresia Scalf of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; his family members" and "wonderful caregivers" at Greene Valley Developmental Center, whom he loved very much, the family noted.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday and from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, 2001 Oakland Avenue in Johnson City.
The funeral service will follow visitation at 2 o'clock Sunday in the South Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Mike Young will officiate.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Josh Ledford, Wayne Hyatt, Mark Barner, Neal Holt, Steve Inscore, Danny Copas and Justin Elby.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Munir Ahmed, Dr. Devi Deeann, Dr. Marlen Mathiesen, Joyce Daniels, Debbie Bryant, Kay Payne and Dr. Bud Meece.
