- Margie Darlene Guinn Young, 72, died wrapped in the arms of her daughters on Saturday, January 8, 2022, following a brief illness.
Darlene was a retired advertising executive with the Elizabethton Star. She was born in Elizabethton and raised in Johnson County. She was devoted to her family and friends. Darlene was a loyal friend, fierce protector of loved ones, amazing mother, and phenomenal grandmother. She was a member of several charitable organizations to which she donated her time and money. Her joy in life was her family. She loved all of her babies and welcomed anyone who needed a family. No one has ever had a bigger, kinder, or more generous heart. She will be missed every day by every generation of her family.
Darlene had three biological daughters but a multitude more that she “adopted” as her own. She was Nana to 23 grandchildren but, again, was known as “Nana” to dozens more. She was one in a million.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, James Sanford Garland and Ruby Juanita McCoy Garland, and her husband, Jerry Dean Young.
Her daughters are Kim Greene, Neila Guinn, and Beth Guinn-Gillenwater. She had two sons-in-law, Ron Carr and Garney Gillenwater Jr. Darlene had 10 grandchildren, Kristen White, Chase Campbell, Ronnie Carr, Chad Carr, Allison Carr Cole (husband Timothy Cole), Dylan Gillenwater, Olivia Guinn, Lucas Gillenwater, Cerri Bradley Lowe (husband Dylan Lowe), and Jaylin Bradley. Great-grandchildren are Brenna Allen, Bella Neal, Brooklynn Cole, Karson Cole, Emersyn Cole, Baby Sprinkles Cole, Brayden Dickens, Lane Lowe, Stetson Lowe, Hannah Carr, Addison Carr, McKinlee Carr and Salem Carr. “Adopted” daughters include Linda Bradley and Becky Simmons. There are too many special friends, additional daughters and grandchildren to list but they were cherished. She left behind a huge family to carry on her legacy of generosity and love.
