- SHADY VALLEY, Tenn.– Nelle Neely Jenkins, age 95, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness.
She was a native of the Sutherland Community and was born June 18, 1908, to the late Isaac Andrew and Susan Ellen Hand Neely. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Taylor Jenkins, who passed away 21 years ago on this date in 1981; also by six sisters; and four brothers.
She and her husband owned and operated Jenkins Grocery for 35 years on Orchard Road in Shady Valley. They where the original owners of the Jenkins Cranberry Bog and Mrs. Jenkins served as Grand Marshall for the October 2003 Cranberry Festival. She was a 50-year member of the Extension Club and very active member with the Shady Valley Senior Citizens, a charter member of the Shady Valley Presbyterian Church and loved to read and was well-known for her beautiful hanging baskets.
Survivors include a daughter, Dot Scott and husband Charles, of Shady Valley; a son, Carroll Jenkins and wife Eloise, of Shady Valley; a sister, Faye Brinkley of Shady Valley; three grandchildren, Lorie Shumate and husband John of Shady Valley, Jeffrey Jenkins and wife Cindy of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Greg Jenkins and wife Tabitha of Jonesborough; two great-grandchildren, Colt Jenkins and Lenzie Jenkins; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ginger Norris and JoAnn Porter also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, from the Shady Valley Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Thomas Peake, Minister Jim Sherman and Minister Jim Hutchinson to officiate.
Music will be under the direction of Tom and Ann Peake. Burial will be Wednesday in the Wood-Scott Cemetery in Shady Valley.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Jenkins, Greg Jenkins, John Shumate, Norman Taylor, Jim Eller and Wallace Coffey. Honorary pallbearers will be: Virgil Cretsinger, Henry Perdue, Malcolm Perdue, Dr. Michael Kimbro, Doug Hornsby and Taylor Scott.
