BIG STONE GAP, Va. Lula Dona Watkins Milligan, 99 went to her Heavenly home to be with Jesus on Jan. 27, 2008.
She was formerly of Appalachia, Va., and had been living in Big Stone Gap, home of her daughter since March of 1998. A Wise County resident most of her life, she was born in Speers Ferry, Va.
She was the oldest child of the late Elbert Harim Watkins and Rennie Elizabeth (Davidson) Watkins.
From 1948 to 1960, she was the first woman janitor to work at the old Appalachia School under Walter Jones, principal and had been a faithful member of Appalachia Christian Church since 1931.
Lula was preceded in death by her husband, George Milligan, both parents, five brothers, Clarence, Charlie, Lloyd, Frank and Cecil; one sister, Nancy Bessie Shelton; one son, Raymond Milligan; and a son-in-law, Charles Akers.
Survivors are one son, Harry and wife, Eula Milligan, Bristol, Va.; one daughter, Sarah Akers, Big Stone Gap, Va.; four grandchildren, Darryl Milligan, Bristol, Tn, Gerald Milligan, North Carolina, Brian Akers and Dona Akers, both of Big Stone Gap, Va.; also one sister, Etta Bolling, Florida.
Her body will lie in state one hour from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Appalachia, Va., prior to leaving in procession at 11 a.m.. to go to Mountain View Cemetery, 1019 East Valley Drive, Bristol, Va. for the graveside services.
