- Reverend Herman Rhea Crumley, 84, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at his residence. Herman was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Eston and Ethel Crumley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Worley Crumley and Kenneth Crumley; one sister, Grace Crumley; and one nephew, Jerry Crumley.
Herman was a member of Doe River Baptist Church, where he served as an Assistant Pastor and Sunday School Teacher. He also supplied for the Watauga Baptist Association. Herman retired from East Tennessee State University. He was a wonderful husband and dad and loved to witness to people about the Lord.
Herman also enjoyed riding motorcycles, collecting old cars, meal times and spending time with his family — especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Herman is survived by his wife, Charlotte Calloway Crumley, of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marcella and Murrel Mullins of Elizabethton, Betty and Tim Mason of Knoxville and Misty Crowe (Billy Hilton) and special grandchildren, Madison and Mariah Crowe of Elizabethton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Lynn Crumley and wife Michelle of Butler; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and his sisters-in-law, Bonnie Crumley of South Carolina and Ina Mae Campbell of Elizabethton.
A service to celebrate and honor the life of Reverend Herman Rhea Crumley will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 13, at Doe River Baptist Church with Reverend Daniel Fink and Reverend Jim Hawk officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dale Williams, Joey Cole and Teresa Bowers, pianist. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 until 3 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, or at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 14, in the Wilson Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Herman’s grandchildren.
