- JOHNSON CITY - Curley Peterson, 84, of Johnson City, peacefully passed away in the hospice community living center at the James H. Quillen Veteran’s Administration Hospital on Sunday, March 8, 2020.
He was born on March 28, 1935 in Poplar, North Carolina to Sidney and Flossie Peterson, and was the second of four children.
the U.S Navy at the tender age of 16. He served his country well and retired after 20 years as a chief petty officer on Nuclear submarines.
Curley married the love of his life, Barbara Ann McKinney in Erwin, TN on June 4, 1954. They were married for 61 years when his beloved wife passed away. They had two children.
After retiring from the Navy in 1971, Curley moved his family from Charleston, SC to Johnson City, TN to be close to immediate family. While working full time, Curley entered college and graduated with a BS degree in accounting. He spent the remainder of his working career as an accountant. When Curley retired, he enjoyed woodworking and gardening with his wife. His faith and family meant everything to him. He was a faithful, humble servant and served in the capacity of treasurer and deacon in the various churches he attended. Curley was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City.
Curley was a loving, devoted father to two daughters: Theresa (James) Buchanan, of Petersburg, VA, and Belinda Miller, of Johnson City; and a very proud grandfather to one granddaughter, Kaitlin Miller. He was a very loving brother to Malone, Phyllis, and the late, Nella Jane, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Curley was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Flossie Peterson, his wife Barbara, and his sister, Nella Jane. He will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a gentle, humble, selfless, kind, Godly man, who loved his faith, family, and country.
The family will greet friends to share memories in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 from 4:00 pm until a Celebration of Life Service at 6:00 PM with Pastor Phil Graeber and Pastor Randy Griffith officiating. An Entombment and Committal service will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
