- ELIZABETHTON — Rev. Horace C. Bowers, 75, of 287 Old Lacy Hollow Road, Elizabethton, went home to heaven be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 18, 2010, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, TN, following an extended illness.
He was the son of the late Emmitt and Rowena Brown Bowers and was a native of Carter County in the Hampton community. Mr. Bowers was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a carpenter, minister, former employee of Great Lakes Research, served as an associate pastor for eleven years at Hunter First Baptist Church and was a member of the Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by six brothers and nine sisters.
Rev. Bowers is survived by his wife of 51 years, Violet Carrier Bowers, of the home; one son, Jonathan Horace Bowers, of Knoxville, TN; one daughter and son-in-law, Rowean and Kenneth Dunn, of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Daniel Dunn and wife, Teresa, of Johnson City, David Dunn and wife, Jessica, and Dianna Dunn, all of Elizabethton; five great grandchildren, Chaz Deakins, Alyssa Dunn, Zachariah Dunn, John Ethan Deakin, all of Elizabethton, and Caleb Rosenbalm, of Johnson City; a soon to be born great granddaughter, Karleigh Grace Dunn; a sister, Lena Peters, of Elizabethton; and a beloved dog, little bit. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Rev. Bowers will be conducted on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at 8:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton, with Rev. Daniel Dunn, Rev. Dale Greenwell and Rev. Jerry Lyons officiating.
The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM on Wednesday prior to the service.
Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:45 PM to go in procession to the cemetery.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 21, 2010, at Emmert Cemetery in Elizabethton. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post No. 49. Active pallbearers will be Levi Hochstetier, Robert Rosenbalm, Jack Berry, Jerry Lunsford, Lewis Blevins and Gerald Holly. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church, friends and neighbors.
