She was born May 4, 1920 to the late Weaver and Ethel Holtsclaw, her stepmom, Nettie Edney Holtsclaw. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jake Hughes; her loving son, Wade (Virgie) Hughes; her brothers, Conley, Voyd, Dana, Carmel and Orville Holtsclaw; and her sisters, Vernie Hughes, Renelee Whitehead and Norma Rea Birchfield.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter, Margaret (Wayne) Heaton; her son, Gary (Peggy) Hughes, Elizabethton; her grandchildren, Wendell (Karen) Heaton, Gray, and Natasha Ann Hughes of Colorado; a very special sister, Onza Johnson, age 103, (they shared their home together recently at Waters of Roan Highlands); and many nieces and nephews.
Beulah enjoyed gardening, camping, watching golf and quilting. She was well known for her canning pickle beans, corn and kraut and making apple butter outside with her family. After her children were grown she worked at Cannon Memorial Hospital for 10 years.
Her home church was Burbank Free Will Baptist Church. She looked forward to church services at Roan Highlands. A special thank you for all the love and care given to her at Roan Highlands. Beulah loved the mountains and Cove Creek Community, Roan Mountain, where she lived all her life.
A graveside service (her wish) was conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, February 10, in the Hughes Family Cemetery, Cove Creek Road, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Richard Blevins officiating. Pallbearers were family and friends.
