- Orb Salyer, 22 years old and a brother were visiting their sister Mrs. Lottie A Salyer Renfro in Elizabethton Tennessee, when tragedy occurred. It took place May 9th 1916 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Renfro shortly after midnight. Mr. Renfro, who was 40, came home intoxicated. The Slayers brothers tried to take him to his room; Renfro resisted their efforts and became infuriated at them. He seized a shotgun and shot Orb in the head, killing him instantly. Immediately after the shooting went to the barn in the rear of his home, remaining there until daylight when he was arrested; Renfro was later given a preliminary hearing and was bound over to the September term of court, but was released for $2,000 bail. When the Salyers brothers left their home on Monday morning to visit their Tennessee sister, they were accompanied by their father, who was preparing to make a business to West Virginia. The father told his sons that he had had a premonition in a dream of the fate that waited one of his sons. He told his sons of the dream he had in which he saw his sons fighting, one evidently trying to kill the other and warned them to be careful on their trip.Funeral services for Orb were held in Johnson City at the home of his brother, W.C. Salyers, his body was interred at Oak Hill Cemetery.Sources:The Johnson City comet., May 11, 1916Alexandria gazette. (Alexandria, D.C.), May 10, 1916Putnam County herald.
