- Essie Ollis Beam, 98, of River Hill Road, Spruce Pine passed away Thursday September 10, 2009. A native of Avery County she was a daughter of the late Jonathon and Lucy Huskins Ollis and was the Owner and Operator of Beam’s Restaurant. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband James Ramey Beam, a son; Bob Beam, a grandson, Kevin Beam, two sisters; Ada Minton and Ida Miller and four brothers; Council Ollis, Kelsey Ollis, Kelly Ollis, and Ted Ollis. Survivors include four daughters; Barbara Stradley of Statesville, NC, Berenda Eng and husband Richard of Spruce Pine, Bonita Bishop and husband Douglas of Hickory, NC and Beverly VanRoekel and husband Johnnie of Lexington, NC, a sister, Nellie Hall of Spruce Pine and a daughter in law Margaret Beam of Newland. She is also survived by five grandsons; Bobby Beam, Jr. of Roan Mountain, TN, Kenneth Beam of Banner Elk, NC, David Stradley of Raleigh, Jon Eric VanRoekel and Graham VanRoekel both of Lexington, NC, and three granddaughters; Jada Daniels of Spruce Pine, Anna Bishop and Abby Bishop both of Hickory, NC, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Beam will be conducted at 3:00 pm Sunday September 13, 2009 in the Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrin Waldroup officiating. Interment will follow in the Green Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
