- Irene H. Gouge, age 89 of Gray, TN departed this life June 23, 2008 at 4:05 A.M. to be with her Lord. Mrs. Gouge was a Mitchell County, NC native and the daughter of the late G.W. and Amanda Mosley Harrell.
She attended Mitchell County School, a graduate of Bowman High School, Bakersville, NC, and taught adult education. After moving to Johnson City she attended Steed College and was a certified CNA from Appalachian Hospital.
Mrs. Gouge was a licensed cosmetologist for 38 years, owned and operated Irenes Beauty Shop for 30 years. She served as President of the Johnson City Hairdressers Association, attended and received diplomas from UT Knoxville and Clariol Institute of New York. She was a former member of Franklin Chapter of American Business Women's Association for 25 years having been selected "Woman of the Year 1976." She was an avid traveler including the Holy Land. She was a former Red Cross volunteer at North Side Hospital. Mrs. Gouge was a member of Boones Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gouge was preceded in death by three brothers, six sisters, two grandsons and one great grandson.
Survivors include her husband of 69 years 11 months Thomas C. Gouge of Gray, two daughters Jolene Fletcher of Johnson City and Sandra Crowder (Herschell) of Kingsport. Grandchildren Angela Huddle and Wendell (Cindy) Huddle of Kingsport, Andrew Huddle (Michelle) of South Carolina, Tommy Tester and Steven Tester (Anna) of Gray, Sarah A. Flanagan of Maryland, Eleven Great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gouge will be at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, June 25th in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Rev. Kenneth Kyker and Rev. Steve Tilley officiating. Music will be provided by Ray & Dorothy Jo Bowman and Jacob Tilley. The family will receive friends from 11AM up to service time or anytime at the residence. Graveside and committal service will be at Roselawn Memory Gardens following the service. Active pallbearers will be, Wendell Huddle, Andrew Huddle, Curtis Huddle, Daniel Wright, Steven Tester, Tommy Tester, Tilford Harrell, Gregg Harrell and Arthur Garland. Honorary Pallbearers will be Boones Creek Ruritan Members.
