- Herbert "Herb" Jenkins, of the Buladean, NC Community passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2013. Herb, a son of Daniel Webster and Della Ball Jenkins, was 85. Herb honorably served his country, with two stints of military service. From 1948 to 1950 he served in The United States Navy, where he was a Seaman First Class. Afterward, from 1951 to 1954, he served in The United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Corporal. Herb left Buladean at an early age to seek work in Baltimore, Maryland. He worked for many years at Glen L. Martin in Baltimore. Herb returned home to Buladean in 1979 and was employed at Texas Instruments in Johnson City, TN until his retirement. Herb was a fixture in the Buladean Community and was known for his wit and willingness to carry on a conversation about most any subject. Herb attended Middle District Free Will Baptist Church, also in the Buladean Community.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife Jean, three brothers, Robert, Venard, and W. S. Jenkins, all of Buladean, and four sisters, Dorothy Hughes, Sara Arrowood, Stella Street and Frances Arrowood, also all of Buladean. He is survived by his daughter, Beth Hughes, his much beloved grandson Steven Hill and a multitude of family and friends.
Herb was a unique, memorable character and was a staple in north Mitchell County. He could be seen frequenting restaurants and the local country store, where he was engaged in conversations of various topics. He will be greatly missed in and around Buladean.
The family will receive friends Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 7:00PM until 9:00PM in Middle District Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 2:00PM in Middle District Free Will Baptist Church with Scott Jenkins, Jimmy Arrowood, and Stephen Miller officiating. Graveside services and interment will follow in the church cemetery with military funeral honors.
