- The Reverend James Ralph Carver, 84, moved over to Heaven from his home on June 22, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on Aug. 4, 1934 in Avery County, NC, the eldest son of the late Earl Carver Sr. and Stella Jones Carver. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Luther and Arnold Carver and brother-in-law's Wayne Watts and Gerald Johnson.
He is survived by his Wife of 61 years: Geneva Wooten Carver, and their five Children: sons Jim Carver (Julie), Jonathan Carver (Kayla) and daughters Jan Paysour, Hannah Jane Carver and Faith Bloomer. He has six Grandchildren: Stacie, Kristen, Christopher, Caleb, Alyssa and Skylar; and six Great-grandchildren: AnnaKatherine, LexiGrace, Adalynn, Braylon, Conlan and Lochlan; three Sisters: Mary Watts, Betty Smith (Jim), Minnie Johnson and a Brother: Earl Carver Jr. (Teresa).
He started in the commercial roofing business with the GG Ray Company in 1954. In 1968, he and his brothers Luther and Arnold purchased Long Brothers Roofing in Gastonia. The company became one of the largest commercial roofing contractors in the Southeast. In 1991, he and his sons founded Carver & Sons Roofing in Gastonia. He retired from the roofing industry in 1995.
He was called by God into the ministry in 1972 and in 1973; he was inspired by God to organize the Independent Baptist Tabernacle in Dallas, NC with 30 charter members. He faithfully served as the Pastor until the time of his death. Regarded as "a simple man," he touched the lives of many people through his ministry and willingness to help others.
He enjoyed special times with his family, farming, gardening and surf fishing with his friends. He liked tinkering with his antique car, tractor and beekeeping.
The Celebration of Rev. Carver's Life will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, at the Independent Baptist Tabernacle with Pastor Keith Carson, Pastor Ronnie Millsaps and Pastor Cecil Spry officiating. Interment will follow the service at the church cemetery. The visitation will be held at the church beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Jones, Eddie Ward, Steve Garland, Keith Gates, Roger Hembree and George Adams. Honorary Pallbearers will be Farrell Buchanan, Joe Vause, Dean Carpenter, Keith Spencer, Mervin Cloninger, Tim Watts and Steve Creason.
