Notes |
- Elbert was the son of James Jenkins [1800-1845] and Catherine Bolling [1806-1900]. CSA and Union military records indicate Elbert was conscripted into service with the CSA infantry in Bristol, Tennessee 22 January 1864. He served in Company I, 14th Infantry Regiment [CSA}. This happened while his two older brothers were fighting in the Union Cavalry. The CSA record shows he was captured at Wilderness ,Virginia 4 May 1864. However, the Union records indicate that Elbert " deserted and gave himself up voluntarily at the Wilderness". Yet, the Union records show that he was considered a Prisoner of War and sent him to Belle Plains, Va and then by boat and rail to the Elmira Prison Camp in New York-arriving there sometime after 23 July 1864. He died there 21 Mar 1865 from the terrible prison conditions as did one of every four Confederate prisoners held in Elmira.
