- Addie Burleson Barrier, age 98, of Plumtree, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 24th, 2014 at the Brian Center Rehabilitation and Care Center in Spruce Pine, NC. She was a daughter of the late Fred and Dona Justice Burleson. Addie was also preceded in death by her husband Bob Barrier, who passed away in 1993; a son, Bobby "Grady" Barrier; three brothers and four sisters.
At the age of 15, she graduated valedictorian of the Cranberry High School class of 1931. She pursued her dream of becoming a teacher by attending Mitchell College in Statesville, NC; she graduated with honors in 1934. She later attended Appalachian Teacher's College graduating in 1951. "Miss Addie", as she was affectionately known, taught 1st grade at Riverside Elementary School for forty-four years. On Christmas Eve of 1947, Addie married Bob Barrier at the Plumtree Presbyterian Church, of which she was a life-time member. Not only was Miss Addie an academic educator, she also touched lives by teaching Sunday School for over forty years. Addie was recognized as a "Citizen of the Century" on July 30th, 2011 at the Avery County Centennial Celebration. She loved all her friends, family, and students. Teaching was her passion.
