- Phillip Lloyd Barrier, age 80, of Ingalls, North Carolina passed away on Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine, NC surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on January 3, 1938 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Bob Barrier and the late Ruth Buchanan Barrier.
He graduated from the Cranberry High School and served his country in the United States Marine Corps, reaching the rank of Corporal. He returned home and worked for Glen Raven Mills in Newland before joining the North Carolina Department of Transportation, retiring as Assistant Superintendent for Avery County. After Phil retired from the DOT, he helped his youngest son run Belview Flowers Inc. He was a member of the Minneapolis Christian Church, where he had served as a Deacon, Elder, and Sunday School Superintendent for over 50 years. Phil loved to be outdoors, especially mowing his family's yards.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Bobby "Grady" Barrier; twin sisters: Rose and Ruth Barrier; step mother: Addie B. Barrier; brother-in-law: Frank Thornton.
Phil leaves behind to cherish his memory: Wife of 56 years, Mitzi Greene Barrier of Newland, NC; Son: Phillip Lloyd (Renee) Barrier, Jr.; Daughter: Diane (Larry) Pyatte; Son: Charles Robert (Stacie) Barrier; Sister: Anita Thornton; sister-in-law: Barbara Barrier; Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren: Kendra and Kevin Sheets and their children, Katlin and Luke; Jane and Josh Ollis; Hailey and Ricky Kinner, and their children Adelyn and Merrick; Kaila and Teddy Thomas, and their child, Hunter; Jessie and Joe Schwartz, and their children, Landon and Isabella; Lacey and Tyler Buchanan; Joshua E. Barrier; Lanie Duncan; Eli Duncan; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins and many, many friends.
