- Lewis Harold Wills, age 93, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Virginia. He had resided at Mountain City Care Center for the last eighteen months.
Mr. Wills was born to the late Edward Haynes Wills and Mary Sophronia Wills on May 30, 1925 in Mountain City, TN. He was a direct descendant of Lewis Wills, the first Wills settler in East Tennessee in the 1700's. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wills was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Thomas Wills.
He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Mountain City.
Mr. Wills was the owner of Johnson County Tractor Company which he operated in Mountain City for more than 40 years. In addition he produced/grew pole beans in Johnson County and surrounding areas on a large scale operation.
Mr. Wills was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and an enthusiastic supporter of all UT sports. He was also an avid golfer in his younger years. During WW II he served his country in the Army Air Corps.
He served his community in many capacities over the years. He served as Johnson County Republican Executive Committee Chairman and also as Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. He set on the Board of the Johnson County Soil Conservation as a District Supervisor since its inception in 1954, holding several different offices in that board. He was honored in 2016 for being the longest serving member in TN. He was a member of the Lion's Club for many years, also chairing that organization at one time and member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 F & AM.
Mr. Wills follows all his siblings in his passing: Edward H. Wills Jr., Elizabeth (Lib) Muse McClellan, James B. (Jay) Wills and Dorothy (Dot) Shore along with a brother-in-law Donald Thomas. He leaves as survivors a son, Lewis H. Wills II and wife Lonna of Memphis, TN and daughter, Carol Ann Wills of Marion, VA along with sister-in-law, Nancy Wood and husband Jerry of Columbia, SC, sister-in-law, Thelma Thomas, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a devoted caregiver and friend of several years, Sue Dugger and special friends Roger and Barbara Hensley.
The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church of Mountain City. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Warren Stewart officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Wills Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe Triplett, Billy Walker, Bob Heck and Earl Davis. Honorary pallbearers are Lewis Carroll Walker, Mike Wills, Jimmy Wills, Roger Hensley, Morris Woodring, Tommy Jack Shoun.
