- Tommy McKinney, age 84, of Whitaker Branch Road, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 30th, 2015. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Dewey and Tempie Burleson McKinney. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Buchanan and three sisters. Tommy was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist church where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He loved all his family dearly. He enjoyed sitting on the porch in the sunshine smoking his pipe, fishing and helping everyone he knew.
Surviving is his loving wife, Mollie Hughes McKinney; daughters: Carolyn Jones and husband, Dickie, Barbara Buchanan and husband, Colin and Robin McKinney and husband, Burl, all of Whitaker Branch Road; sister, Nellie Pittman, of Ohio; brothers: Mutt McKinney and wife, Bertha, of Newland, Frank McKinney and wife, Johnnie, of Squirrel Creek and Jack McKinney, and wife, Birdie Mae of Boone; grandchildren: Carol Ann Johnson and Eddie Jones, great grandchildren: Logan Johnson, Layken Johnson, landon Johnson and Lillyanna Johnson, Makenna Buchanan and Lexie Buchanan. Several nieces, nephew and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, November 2nd in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Pastor Allen Laws will officiate. Burial will follow in the Buchanan and McKinney Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3p.m. prior to the funeral service at the church. Yancey Funeral Services is serving the McKinney family.
