- Mrs. Zona Carpenter Shook, 70, of Rt. 3, Newland, died Saturday in a Johnson City, Tenn., hospital after a short illness. Surviving are the husband, Herman Shook; three sons, Leo Prather of Phoenix, Ariz., Lacy Prather and Tommy Shook of Newland; an adopted son, Carrol Stamey of Newland; three brothers, Dellie, Thurman, and Robert Carpenter of Newland; two sisters, Mrs. Tempie Ingram and Mrs. Harold Benfield of Newland; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Big Meadows Baptist Church. The Revs. James Barrier and Carson Eggers officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Nephews of the deceased were pallbearers.
