- J. L. Hamby, age 68, 539 Teaberry Rd. # 3, Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord Friday, December 5, 2008 from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Barney and Martha Ashley Hamby. Mr. Hamby was a welder and enjoyed working on cars. He was of the Christian faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hamby was preceded in death by his siblings Lester Hamby, Claude Hamby, Bruce Hamby, Pauline Moore, Lula Belle Ashley and Mary Lou Reynolds. Survivors include his wife of forty-seven years Sarah Hamby of the home, children: Regina Hutcheson, Elizabethton, Jay Hamby and wife Teralyn, Dyer, IN, Bill Hamby, Ravenden, AR, Rick Hamby, Hammond, IN, one half-daughter: Lisa Crook and husband Kevin, Madisonville, KY, eight grandchildren, a sister, Lorene Connors and husband Bill, Roan Mountain and a brother, Burnett Hamby and his companion Eve Booth, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The Celebration of Life service for Mr. Hamby will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 8 at the Tetrick Funeral Home Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Jude Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in the Isaac Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Tyler Hutcheson, Richard Hamby, Carroll Hamby, Jimmy Miller, Rex Gouge, Stevie Vargo and Michael Hamby.
