- JOHNSON CITY - Garland Lawrence McIntosh, 87, started his journey of life on January 12, 1929. On Friday evening, June 3, 2016, surrounded by his friends and family, he was released from all of the earths restraints, to enter in to his new eternal home in Heaven with his Lord and Savior.
He was the eldest son of Richard and Axie Fender McIntosh. At the time of his death he was cared for in Erwin, TN at The Center on Aging and Health. He grew up in Flag Pond, TN, a place he dearly loved. He lived most of his adult life in Johnson City, Tn. He proudly served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army Airborne Division. He received The World War II Victory Medal. He often spoke of his adventures of "jumping out of perfectly good airplanes", especially to his great grandsons who are now serving. Our father was employed at Burlington Industries "Klopman Mills" and with his strong work ethic in 45 years never missed a days work.
Dad's plans were to retire in May of 1994, but on March 3rd while doing what he loved to do, which was trout fishing in Flag Pond, he was struck by a car and sustained a couple of injuries. The highway patrolman who was at the scene stated that the odds of this happening could be compared to winning the lottery. During his long stay in the hospital dad would inform us he would return to work and then retire. So with the Lord's help and healing and our fathers strong will and determination, he did just that and retired. His doctor always said "Well Mr. McIntosh you went to catch a fish but caught a Buick". Yes he loved to fish and to farm and work the land, and did until his limitations were too many.
Loving to attend church and be with others in his Faith he was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church and in his later years when he could no longer drive for long distances he and Mom attended Oakland Avenue Baptist, Heritage Baptist. All of these congregations of believers and their Pastors Bobby Stout, Mark Fowler and Roy Yelton, Reggie Weems were his brothers and sisters in Christ. They have been so kind and caring to us, both dad and mom, visiting them when they could no longer attend, also always sending cards and giving themselves to them.
Our father served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, he loved studying Gods word, and sharing it with others. He loved music and singing in the choir. Even when his mind was touched by Alzheimers, The Lord allowed him to remember the scriptures and sing the songs he loved.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved nephew, Bruce Ricker; niece, Marie Ellen Rice; an infant niece; sister-in-law, Vonda Lee McIntosh; his mother and father-in law George and Maritta Silvers; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and many dear friends that were there to welcome him home.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty six years, Eunice Silvers McIntosh, sons: Richard McIntosh (Joan) Knoxville, TN, Chris McIntosh (Tammy), Johnson City; daughters: Sharon Hulse (Reese), Jonesborough, TN, Kathleen Phillips (Greg), Bluff City, TN; grandchildren: Mellisa Bingham (Todd), Robert McIntosh (Christy), Tina McIntosh, Jennifer Hyder (Chris), Michelle Simpson (Jerry), Heather Hughes (Jamie), Beth Hulse (Keith), Jason Jones, Connor McIntosh, Cooper McIntosh; great-grandchildren: Ashley, Alex, Trey, Braxton, Bailey, Hunter, Hayden, James, Patrick, Jonathan, Taylor, Jerica, Justin, Kelsie, Dawlton, Chesney, Madison, Olivia, Peyton, Cody, Dillion; great-great-grandchildren: Ava, and Greyson; brothers and sisters: Kenneth McIntosh, Morgantown, WV, Martha Ricker (Warren), Algonac, MI, Pauline Rice, Erwin, TN, Howard McIntosh, Flag Pond, TN, Foy Lee McIntosh (Nancy), Kingsport, TN, Andy McIntosh (Debbie), Telford, TN; brothers and sisters-in-law: Harrison Silvers (Nellie), Flag Pond, TN, Offie Silvers (Ellieen), Flag Pond, TN, Raleigh Silvers (Linus), Erwin, TN, Reba Silvers, Limestone, TN, Genevia Silvers, Erwin, TN, several nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to say "Thank You" to the Center on Aging and Health, Pleasant Beach Baptist Church, Oakland Avenue Baptist, Heritage Baptist, Kevin Laws (chaplain at the Center on Aging and Health), for their care and compassion to our father and mother, and all of our family, and for all the text, emails, phone calls, visits and especially the prayers.
