- HENDERSON-J. Thomas McBride, 80, of Henderson, NC passed away Friday, November 16th, 2018 at The Granville House in Oxford, NC.
Born in Washington College, TN, he was the son of the late Gertha Henley McBride and Hal Tryon McBride. He graduated from Carson Newman College cum laude, obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Master of Theology from Duke University. Tom was pastor of White's Creek Baptist Church in Rockwood, TN from June 1958-1962. He was pastor of Mary's Chapel Baptist Church in Wake Forest, NC from August, 1962- June, 1966. He served as Chaplain at John Umstead Hospital in Butner from 1965-1970 at which time he began his career as director of Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren county area mental health program. Tom retired in 1999. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Henderson where he sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and served as a deacon. He was chairman of the board of ACTS (Area Christians Together in Service) for several years. Tom loved his church, his family, his friends, his career and co-workers, the outdoors, mountains, woodworking, music, hiking, biking, horseback riding, traveling, and last but not least, desserts!
A service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at First Baptist Church in Henderson by Dr. Ronald S. Cava and Dr. Marion D. Lark. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall and at other times they will be at the home.
He is survived by his wife of 58.5 years, Rebecca Jane McBride; his daughter, Amy McBride Howie and husband, Jim; his son, Steven Scott McBride and wife, Shannon; four grandsons, Zachary Denson, Michael Denson, Alan McBride, Hayden McBride; one sister, Joy McBride Tubb and husband, Quenton; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roby McBride and Jimmy McBride; and one sister, Bonnie McBride Calhoun.
