- Willie D. Hammons, age 75, left this life and entered his heavenly home on Monday, October 8, 2018.
He was born on October 4, 1943, the son of the late Ernest and Edith Hammons of the Forge Creek Community.
Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 51 years, Naomi Blevins Hammons, their son, Alan Hammons and wife Sonya, and their daughter Rebecca Dietrich and husband Marc; siblings, Jean Chappell, Lynn Hammons and wife Sue, and Larry Hammons and wife Sharon; six wonderful grandchildren whom he cherished dearly, Michael Kirby, Austin Norris, Alison Dietrich, Ethan Dietrich, Oren Hammons and Eli Hammons and many nieces and nephews on both the Hammons and Blevins side of the family.
After graduating from ETSU in 1969, Willie worked in the Johnson County School System for 37 years as a teacher and Director of the Vocational Program. He had a vision to enhance the construction program by purchasing property on which to build and sell homes. He worked diligently to establish this successful program before his retirement in 2006.
Willie spent his retirement years farming and raising cattle. He worked passionately and had a successful Braunvieh cattle farm with his son, Alan. Willie served his community well. He was a lifelong member and Elder of Hammons Chapel Christian Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He loved serving the Lord in any way he could.
He recently took on the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Doe Mountain Recreation Authority. He had a desire to allow people to enjoy the beauty of Johnson County through the responsible development of Doe Mountain.
Willie enjoyed spending time with friends and family and enjoying life. He was a member of The Young at Heart Square Dance Club for many years. He also enjoyed going to the Senior Center and visiting with his friends.
After retirement, Willie and Naomi traveled to several different countries and much of the United States including Alaska and the US Virgin Islands. They especially enjoyed visiting Israel and Austria.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnson County Senior Center or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 1-4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2018 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Joshua Giddings officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow the funeral at the Dunn Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Matthew Lewis, Travis Lewis, Kevin Hammons, Phillip Chappell, Jimmy Chappell, Brandon Hammons and Rick Curd. Honorary pallbearers are Men of Hammons Chapel Christian Church, Clarence Braden and Jake Lewis.
