- Ella Dessire Greene Whitehead, age 91, formerly of 229 Garrison Hollow Road, Elizabethton, joyously entered Heaven to be with her husband of 68 years on Friday, May 8, 2009 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Avery County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Coy C. and Nora Guy Greene. She was a member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Whitehead was an avid reader of the scripture and took joy in her garden. She was a wonderful sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was a loyal pastor's wife. In addition to her husband, Rev. Raymond J. Whitehead and her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ella Louise and Dennis Stevens, Elizabethton and Judy Ann and Jay Blythe, Paris Crossing, IN, one grandson, Larry Lynn Moreland and wife, Rebecca Moreland, Elizabethton, one great granddaughter, Olivia Grace Moreland, Elizabethton, two sisters, Blanche Hill and Velma Clemons, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews and five sisters-in-law also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. Whitehead will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Jay Blythe and Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Monday prior to the service from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the residence, 229 Garrison Hollow Road, Elizabethton, from 10 a.m. until 6p.m. Sunday, May 10, or Monday, May 11. Music will be under the direction of Robert and Pay Ray. The graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are ask to meet at the funeral home on Tuesday, at 9:00 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Larry Moreland, Wayne Clemons, Ronald Edwards, Robert Ray, Sam Harrison, Carl Roberson and Leonard Whitehead. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church, Staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home, Nephews and Great Nephews, friends and neighbors.
