- JOHNSON CITY - Floyd J. Hopson, age 92, of Johnson City, passed away at The Waters of Johnson City on August 12, 2018 after a short illness.
Floyd was born March 27, 1926, in Buladean, North Carolina, to Carrick and Hettie Francis Hopson. He moved to Unicoi, Tennessee, with his parents until they agreed to sign the paperwork for him to join the US Navy prior to his eighteenth birthday.
He served in the US Navy from 1943 until 1946. The majority of his service time was spent in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, serving on the USS Howard (DMS-7), a Destroyer that had been converted to a mine sweeper. While serving on the USS Howard, he participated in the battles of Saipan, The Philippines, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, and Iwo Jima.
After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Floyd returned to Johnson City and began a twenty-two year long career with Empire Furniture Corporation; first working as the lumber inspector, and later as Assistant Superintendent. He also worked as a building contractor and land developer in the Johnson City area, where he built quality homes for over fifty years.
In addition to his parents, Floyd is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Hopson; Son, Charles Hopson; and three brothers, Lloyd, Earl, and Arthur Hopson.
Survivors include: his son, Floyd J. Hopson Jr. (Sara) of Brentwood; daughter, Sharon M. McQueen of Johnson City; grandsons, James Hopson (Jamie) of Brentwood, Richard R. McQueen (Helen) of Odessa, Florida, Jeffrey Hopson of Lavergene, and Cole Lowery of Nashville; granddaughter, Tara King (Tommy) of Murfreesboro; great-grandchildren, Johnny, Joey, Jessie, and Jake Hopson of Brentwood, Caleb Thomas, Davis and Nate King of Murfreesboro, and Lilah McQueen of Odessa, Florida.
The family of Floyd Hopson will receive friends at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, and then from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A celebration of life
will follow at 11:00 AM, officiated by Rev. Jim Chatman of Calvary Baptist Church, Johnson City, and Rev. Bob McCurry of Spring Creek Baptist Church, Bakersville, North Carolina. A committal service will be held at 12:30 PM on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at Roselawn Memorial Park, with military honors conducted at that time.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Lester Saylor, Clyde Garrison, Mike Collins, Joe Evans, Eddie Atkins, Jody Dietz, Steve Fair, and Mark Shumate.
