- John Egli was born in Shamokin the son of Jacob Egli & Catherine (Caseman) Egli Fogle Schriner. John was a farmer and lumber manufacturer. In 1840 he moved with his parents to Fairfield township in Lycoming County, there was no school there so his educational advantages were limited. At the age of 9 years following his father's death he was forced to work the family. In 1855 he learned the wagon makers trade at Hall's Station with Martin Keebler working there until 1860. He then bought two lots at Montoursville and opened his own wagon shop which he worked at for 25 years.
On the 22nd day of may he married Sarah Fry at Williamsport. she was the daughter of Jacob & Lydia (Schoch) Fry. They were the parents of Alice who married Thomas Casselberry, William Frank Egli who married Lulu Banghart, M Jane who married Richard George, J Erving who married Jane Brass, Samuel C. of Carter County Tenn, and Clara wife of S W Lowman.
In political matters Mr. Egli is a strong prohibitionist and the family are Lutheran.
