- With sadness in our hearts we announce that Martha Lee Finney Poole, 88, of the Little Milligan Community in Butler, Tenn., slipped peacefully into her Savior’s arms on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at The Waters of Roan Highlands Nursing Home. Martha was born to the late Robert Andrew Finney and Flora Hatley Finney. In addition to her parents, she was ushered into Heaven by her beloved husband, James Poole; three brothers, Robert “Bob” Finney, Phillip Finney and John L. Finney; and three sisters, Minnie Bell Finney, Beulah Richardson and Georgia Mae Taylor.
Martha was raised up going to Elk River Baptist Church on the principal of God and family, a principal she not only believed in but also lived her life as. She was small in stature but mighty and fierce in values and the love she had for her Lord, her family and her friends. Being from a large family in a country setting Martha learned early in life to share kindness and to work hard. She cleaned houses to support her family and lost her husband very early in their life, but never missed a beat raising her children in the Lord’s house and supplying them with love and respect. In her retirement years she enjoyed shopping trips with her sisters and going out to eat, but especially passing the day with anyone that dropped by for a “big Martha smile” and a laugh. For all these reasons we will all miss Martha and remember her always because as the Bible says to be absent in body is to be present with the Lord and that is what will comfort us in our time of need.
Martha would not want to say those left to cherish her memories, but she would say those waiting to join her include her children, Greta Poole Odom and husband Rick, and her son, Gregory Poole and his fiancée Tracie; one sister, Jo Burchette; and also many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, church family and her many wonderful neighbors.
Martha’s “homegoing” service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, October 11, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Brian Cable, Pastor Larry Pearson and Pastor Ronnie Campbell officiating. Music will be provided by Traci Shelton Powers. Friends will be able to visit with the family and share memories and pay condolences from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service. Martha’s graveside service will follow the service at Lakeview Cemetery, Butler, Tenn. Active pallbearers will be chosen from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be her church family at Elk River Baptist Church and the staff of The Waters of Roan Highlands.
