- Bertha Loetta Gouge , age 99, of North US Highway 19-E, Cranberry, passed away on Sunday September 5, 2010 at her residence.
A native of Avery County, she was born January 25, 1911 a daughter of the late Mack and Della Ollis Hughes.
For many years her and her late husband, Ernie Gouge, owned and operated the Snack Bar in Cranberry. She was known for her hamburgers and fried bologna sandwiches. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and caring for the sick.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Thomas G. Gouge and Ernie Gouge; her sisters, Tish Sparks, Anna Ollis, Fanny Massy, and Ora Gragg.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a daughter, Betty Cloninger of Cranberry; son, Thomas Richard Gouge, and his wife, Violet, of Piscataway, NJ; sisters, Georgia Carpenter of Morganton, Elnora Graybill of Cranberry, Aileen Dean of Morganton; brother, Leslie Hughes of New Port News, VA; five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Bertha Gouge will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Interment and graveside services will follow at the Cranberry Cemetery on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m.
