- ELIZABETHTON — Robert Ernest Cardwell, Jr., 83, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2008, in the Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Avery County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Robert Ernest Cardwell, Sr. and Elsie Jacque Parlier Cardwell. He was a graduate of Cranberry High School, East Tennessee State University with a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's from International Correspondence School.
His prior employments were with Graybeal Lumber Company, Roan Mountain; Paty Lumber Company, Elizabethton; and owned the Greenwood Building Materials in Greenwood, South Carolina for a number of years. He retired from Great Lakes Research Corporation as a Mechanical Engineer.
Mr. Cardwell was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elizabethton where he was teacher of the Potter's Clay Sunday School Class and was Deacon Emeritus. He was active in the Watauga Baptist Association, and was instrumental in the starting of the Lynnwood Community Church. He was a Life member of the National Rifle Association, active in the Carter County Community Residence, Inc., The Habitat for Humanities, The Tennessee Association for Retarded Persons, The Carter County-Elizabethton Library Association and the Civitan Club in South Carolina. Mr. Cardwell was in the United States Navy Air Corps during World War II.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Rhea Cardwell.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years: Marjorie Nelle Hyder Cardwell. His Daughter: Jennifer Lynn Cardwell Perkins and husband Steve, Hermitage, Tennessee. Two Sons: Robert Ernest "Robbie" Cardwell III, and Jon Hampton Cardwell and his wife, Julie, all of Elizabethton. Two Sisters: Leunah Cardwell Tipton, Elizabethton, and Mary Ruth Cardwell Ownby, Richmond, Virginia. Six Grandchildren: Bobby Dail Cardwell, Rachelann Cardwell, Austin Bradford Perkins and wife Jennifer, Jon Thomas "Tommy" Cardwell, Dustin Andrew Perkins and Sarai Linnea Perkins. A Great Grandson: Tristan Perkins. Several nieces & nephews and his favorite furry friend, Pepper.
A Service to Celebrate the life of Robert Ernest Cardwell, Jr. will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church with Dr. James Royston and Dr. David Irby officiating.
Graveside Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Bob Polk and Rev. Ron Owens officiating. The Eulogy will be given by Mr. Jon Cardwell. Music will be provided by Julie Cardwell and Erica Yoon, violinist.
Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the church at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday and at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday will be Deacons and the Potter's Clay Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.
