- Karl William Cornett, age 94, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, August 17, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on April 25, 1924 to the late George B. and Effie Taylor Cornett in Mountain City, TN. In addition to his parents, Karl was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Cornett in 1978, son-in-law, Vance Gentry in 2013 and nephew, Bobby Wilson. He married his best friend, Edith Crowder on January 4, 1947. They were married for 71 years.
Karl attended Johnson County High School but was drafted in the United States Army during World War II in 1944, achieving rank of Sergeant. He was stationed in the Pacific during World War II in Okinawa. Upon returning home in 1946, Karl finished school and obtained his GED.He was of non-denominational faith.
Most people in Mountain City and surrounding areas know Karl from Cornett Furniture Store, which was started by Karl and his parents in 1949. His parents helped operate the business until their death. After their passing, Karl operated the store with his wife Edith for a total of 69 years. He was an avid golfer, having shot his age numerous times. He was also a gifted fisherman.
Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Edith Crowder Cornett, children, Joyce Matheson of Mountain City, TN, Judy Gentry of Shady Valley, TN, Aaron Cornett and wife Ann of Mountain City, TN, grandchildren, Melissa Eller and husband Richard, Pam Matheson, Karla Andrews and husband Walt, Kristy Bishop and husband Steven, Matthew Cornett and wife Mackenzie, great grandchildren, Chloe and Zachary Eller, William Andrews, Lauryn and Levi Bishop, Ace and Knox Cornett, sister-in-law, Chessie Cornett, sister, Barbara Wilson and husband Alf, brother, George B. Cornett Jr. and wife Carmie, several nieces and nephews and many special friends and neighbors.
A visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Jerome Frandle and Robert Johnson to officiate.
Graveside service and interment with military honors conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 20, 2018 at the Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Matthew Cornett, Steven Bishop, Walt Andrews, Richard Eller, Zachary Eller, William Andrews, Mel Melissaris. Honorary pallbearers are Darnell Kilgore, Carl Culver, Norman Culver, Hoover Gallaway, Jim White, Andrew Hoots, Tom Hoots, Hyte Crowder, Dr. Fernandez, and Dr. James Shine.
