- HAMPTON - Rex Leslie Hughes, 85, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at the VA Medical Center in Hampton. He was a native of Frank, N.C., and a resident of Hampton since 1951. He was a member of the Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church.
As a teenager, Rex began working in the conservation corp before joining the Army in 1943. During his military career he was a heavy machine gunner and squad leader and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. During the many battles between the borders of France and Germany, Rex became a POW of the German army in 1945. After leaving the military, he began work at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock as a shipfitter in the X11 Department, and retired in the 1980's after a career spanning more than 30 years.
Rex is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Marie Hughes, and six sisters.
He is survived by his sons, Hubert J. Hughes and wife, Sara, Larry M. Hughes and wife, Carrington, and Allen K. Hughes and partner, Dwayne; his grandchildren, Angela Stevens, Jason Hughes, Heather Hughes, Courtney Gonzalez-Vega, Allen K. Hughes II, and Lesli A. Hughes; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Parklawn– Wood Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Bert Rait. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
