- Port M. Thompson passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018 at his home after a long battle with dementia.
Port was born on March 3, 1931. He was the son of Port Senior and Ida Thompson. He graduated from Crossnore High School in 1951. Shortly thereafter Port proudly joined the U.S. Marines. He served during the Korean Conflict where his assignments included standing guard at the bridge where prisoners were exchanged. Port also received three medals of honor, including one for national defense and one for good conduct.
Port worked at Holman & Moody Racing and Hutchinson Pagan Enterprises in the 1960s and 1970s. He went on to work for Duke Power in 1979 and then retired from there in 1994.
Port is preceded in death by his parents: Port, Sr. and Ida Thompson; and his brother: Allen. Surviving family includes his wife of 61 years: Patsie, his son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Christine; his sister: JoAnn Glassman; and nieces and nephews. Surviving loved ones also include their dog, Sadie, and their granddogs.
A celebration of life will be held for family and friends at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, in Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, in Crossnore.
