- Barbara Sue Hughes, age 76, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 16th, 2014 at the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Daddy Joe and Mama Willie Hughes. She was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Lucille Hughes; sister, Shirley Robinson and brother, Kenneth Raymond Hughes. Barbara Sue was a member of Whites Memorial Baptist Church who's life was loving her grandchildren.
Surviving is a daughter, Julie McCurry of Spruce Pine; son, Rick Penrod and wife, Tammy, of Lily Branch; four grandchildren: Cody Buchanan, Skylor McCurry, Joseph Richard Penrod and Savannah Marie Riggs; one great-grandchild, Isaiah Buchanan; two sisters: Louella Singleton and husband, Eddie, and Lila Vance and husband, Butch, all of Stamey Branch; three brothers: Maynard Hughes and wife, Reneth, and Sanford Hughes and wife, Jackie, all of Spruce Pine and Stan Hughes and wife, Amy, of Virgilina. A host of nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19th at Whites Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. David Troutman will officiate.
