- Maynard Earl Hughes, age 76, of Ingalls, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept 16, 2018. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Joe Earl and Willie Mae Hughes. He was also preceded in death by a son: Tony Hughes; siblings: Kenneth Hughes, Shirley Robinson, Sue Hughes and Sanford Hughes. He was a US Army Veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. Maynard was a member of Whites Memorial Baptist Church who loved fishing, hunting and wild flowers.
Surviving is his loving wife of 51 years: Renate Hughes; daughters: Sylvia Jones and husband, Greg, of Spruce Pine, and Manuela Sparks and husband, Jerry, of Spruce Pine; grandchildren: Samantha Canipe and husband, Scott, of Spruce Pine, Seth Hughes and fiancée, Lorie, of Burnsville, Justin Hughes and wife, Kristen, of High Point and Paula McMahon and husband, David, of Ohio; great-grandchildren: Collin and Miriam Irick of Ohio, Macie Hughes of High Point and a great-grandson on his way; siblings: Lila Vance and husband, Butch, of Pyatte, Louella Singleton of Buck Hill and Stanley Hughes and wife, Amy, of Clarksville, Va; sister-in-law: Jacque Hughes of Spruce Pine and a brother-in-law: Fred Robinson of Marion. A host of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, in Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. David Troutman and Dr. Darrin Waldroup officiated. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the services at the church. Graveside services were held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, in Whites Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Sparks officiating and military honors conducted by Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V.
