Ruby Garland Roark Stevens, age 98, passed away peacefully in her Morristown home on April 11, 2017, with family by her bedside. Ruby was born in Erwin, Tenn., but lived most of her life in Bristol, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gray K. Stevens; father, Elisha Garland; mother, Cara McIntosh Garland; several siblings; her daughter, Debra Stevens Matthews of Charlotte, N.C.; son-in-law, Tom Lowe of Morristown, Tenn.; and her great-grandsons, Joshua Sherman of Mt. Holly, N.C. and Zed Whitaker of Greensboro, N.C.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol Roark Taylor (Dennis Taylor) of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Audrey Roark Lowe of Morristown, Tenn.; sister, Madge Keplinger; eight grandchildren, Robin and Tommy, Scott and Dewayne, Rusty, Scotty and Sunny; eight great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, as well as several beloved nieces and nephews; and her best friend, Deborah Hill of Morristown, Tenn.
Ruby was a very strong and independent woman with great tenacity and a delightful sense of humor. She enjoyed creating art, many travels which took her all over the world, and had an adventurous spirit. Ruby often spoke with great pride of her part in World War II effort working at Glenn L. Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, Md. building warplanes. She believed in the hope of eternal life through her Savior, Jesus Christ.
The family was blessed by the tremendous care and compassion given by Smokey Mountain Hospice. Ruby died with the same dignity with which she lived her life.
