- Rev. Victor Lewis Broyles, 79, Rt. 3, Butler, died Saturday night, July 14, 1984 in the Johnson County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Marion, Va., he was the son of Henry Luther and Senia Comer Broyles and had lived a number of years in Sullivan County before moving to Johnson County.
Rev. Broyles was ordained in the Baptist Church in 1953 and had served the following churches: Pierce Baptist Church, Sink Valley Baptist, Fish Springs Baptist and Mt. View Baptist Church. He was a member of the Pierce Baptist Church and also the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge No. 679.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters and by a son, Earl Broyles in 1971.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maude Pierce Broyles; three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Garland, Mrs. Park (Sue) Arnold, both of Butler, and Mrs. J. D. (Corine) Smith, Elkhart, Ind.; ; one son, Ralph Broyles, Mt. Vernon, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Zella McReynolds of Bristol, and Mrs. Hubert (Viola) Greene and Mrs. Hoover (Dorothy) Crowe, both of Elizabethton; and four brothers, Comer Broyles of Elizabethton, Howard Broyles of Bluff City, Joe Broyles, Fort Myers, Fla., and Walter "Paige" Broyles of Butler. Twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ray Greene and Rev. Art Greer officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. The Timber Ridge Quartet will be in charge of music.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. Clarence Snodgrass, Rev. Dolphus Forrester, Harvey White, Rev. R. A. Royston, Rev. David Cunningham, Rev. Hubert Greene, Rev. Alvin Greene, Rev. Richard White and members of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge No. 679 will be in charge of graveside services. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to their local church or the Rescue Squad.
