- Bernice Turnmire parents were James Calvin Turnmire of North Carolina 1872 – 1960 and Texie Brookshire 1886 – 1977 of Tennessee. She had several siblings.
In 1910, when Nellie was a year old, her parents were living on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, Chouteau, Montana. Her father was farming, and her mother was employed as a cook.
The family had relocated to Civil District 16, Washington, Tennessee in 1920. They were renting a house that was on a farm, and Nellie's father was working out as a farmer.
By 1930 the family had relocated again, now to District 9, Greene, Tennessee. They still rented a farm house and her father was employed as a farmer.
When she was 47 years old, she married Thomas Bert Smith, after his first wife died. They had one known daughter, Edna June Smith, born in 1930.
Thomas died Sept. 27, 1957. Thomas's death certificate revealed that he died at 138 Patton Street at Limestone, Green Co. Tennessee of a Cerebrovascular accident due to Generalized Arteriosclerosis that he had been surffering for 5 years prior to his death. His recent wife, Bernice Turnmire Smith was the informant on his death certificate.
