- Rev. Raymond J. Whitehead, 88, 229 Garrison Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following a brief illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Dan and Bertha Ward Whitehead. Rev. Whitehead served in the U.S. Navy, and was also a farmer, woodworker and minister. Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church was his church home. Rev. Whitehead served the following Freewill Baptist Churches as Pastor: Carter County: Friendship, Upper Gap Creek, Sugar Hollow, Oak Hill and Millers Grove; Johnson County: Southside; Unicoi County: Mt. O'Dell, Mtn. Dale and Park Street; Yancey County, N.C.: Millers Chapel and Pattersons Branch.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers. Survivors include his wife, Ella Greene Whitehead, of Ivy Hall Nursing Home, Elizabethton; two daughters and son-in-laws, Ella Louise and Dennis Stevens, Elizabethton, and Judy Ann and Jay Blythe, Scottsburg, Ind.; a grandson and fiance, Larry Lynn Moreland and Rebecca Ann Taylor, Elizabethton; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Grace Moreland, Elizabethton; and three sisters, Rose Largent, Hampton, Kate Cousins, Johnson City, and Hattie Schwartz, Adrian, Mich. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Rev. Whitehead will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Jay Blythe and Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Robert Ray and Pat Ray. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence, 229 Garrison Hollow Road, Elizabethton, at other times. The graveside service and interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone is welcome to meet the family at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Larry Lynn Moreland, Robert Ray, Sam Harrison, Carl Roberson, Leonard Whitehead, Robert Blackston, Alton Metcalf and Rev. Ronnie Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. Jonas Revis, the Men's Class of Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church, nephews and great-nephews, neighbors and friends, and the staffs of Ivy Hall Nursing Home and Adventa Hospice.
