- Orla E. Hicks, 96, 208 Dennis Cove Road, Hampton, died Saturday, January 14, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Hicks was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late John E. and Bertha Turbyfill Holtsclaw. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin E. Hicks; two sons, Elbert and Dewey Hicks; a daughter, Eula Jean Hicks; two brothers, William Holtsclaw and Prince Holtsclaw; five sisters, Ella McKinney, Inez Ray, Lora Perry, Sally VanSchoiack and Brucie Holtsclaw; a foster daughter, Mae Heaton Montgomery; and a grandson, A.J. Hazelwood. Mrs. Hicks was a member of Union Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Ruby and Martin Bennett and Elva and E.C. Vines, all of Hampton, Carrie and James Keene, Oak Ridge, Nola Mae and J.D. Cook, Roan Mountain, Ruth and Rick Barrie and Edna and Edward Thomas, all of Elizabethton; a daughter-in-law, Lala Hicks, Hampton; a foster son and his wife, Allen and Jenny Heaton, Kings Mountain, N.C.; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Hicks will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, January 15, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Campbell, Rev Gary Perkins and Rev. Pete Pollard officiating. Music will be under the direction of the family and Mrs. Karen Timbs, pianist. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service in the chapel. The graveside service will be conducted at 11a.m. Monday, January 16, in the Morton Cemetery, Hampton. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Monday. Active pallbearers will be selected from Mrs.Hicks' grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her brothers and sisters in Christ and a host of friends. Friends may call at the residence of a daughter, Elva Vines.
